Why do we struggle so much at FT's?

When we've lost 3 games by a combined 5 points and in those games:

Gonzaga - 5/8 - 63%
Cincy - 5/11 - 46%
Baylor - 5/11 - 46%

Sub 50% free throws is just ridiculous. Cost us 2 games.

Yeah but it also saved us against Tech. We only tread water for awhile thanks to making free throws.

We got stuffed and missed quite a few around the rim last night too.

I liked his effort last night more than I've seen out of him before. I think he's got a chance to get it going, just needs to finish.

I like Bowie's aggressive play, but I think he just isn't used to the length of the Big 12 interior players. I recall the one play where he drove into the UT big man, then fell back for fade away and the UT player easily blocked it. On another play, he got a little deep under the backboard but tried to put it up anyway and it was easily blocked. Those are two no-no's when going against lengthy players. Another thing I noticed he does is that when he gets a feed in layup range, he often takes a count to gather himself. That's another no-no against shot blockers because that gives them enough time to get in position for the block.

But, this has been an ISU struggle for a number of years now. It could be not having length to practice against, or maybe it is a staff deficiency, but unless players have the ability to finish around the hoop when they come to ISU, they don't don't seem to progress much in that area.

I was shooting hoops with the baby on the little tikes multi sport playset yesterday. Went 87-100 from the line. I'd say that translates to about 90% on a real court.

The saying that the wrong people are shooting them really does seem to apply here.

Using just the players who contribute regularly in the games ISU's guards (Mitrou-Long, Morris, Thomas, Babb and Jackson) have played 1821 minutes and attempted 104 free throws making 81 of them (.779). ISU's big men (Burton, Bowie, Young and Holden) have played just over half as many minutes (938) but shot more FTs (118) and only canned 60 of them (.508). And to make matters worse that doesn't even take into account the number of missed front end of 1 and 1s that have been missed that didn't even give them the chance to miss the second one.

ISU's offense doesn't get guards to the line as much but ISU's guards seem to rarely get the call when they do drive into traffic. Perhaps they need to perfect Frank Mason's swim move where he pushes off the defenders with an extended arm so he always looks off balance and reeling even when it is just contact he initiated that makes him look like he is getting knocked down.

According to the guy next to me it's because we aren't "bending our knees". FWIW.

I really do think there is something to this. Our guards never get the call. Not that I want Burton shooting that many more but he is the perfect example. We like to complain he doesn't go up hard but he also gets called for offensive fouls when he does try to be physical.

Yeah, it's funny how you can shoot thousands of free throws, yet that first free throw can make you feel like your in an unfamiliar place. This is why I think shooting 100 FTs in a row, or even in groups if 10 isn't really that productive. I think it's better to practice shooting 1-2 free throws with a high heart rate ten different times rather than shoot 10-20 in a row.
When I watched practice a couple weeks ago I noticed that they practice in X minute segments, in between they get a drink, while at the free throw line. Somebody is always shooting a FT between segments, and the others are there in the box or waiting to shoot. I don't know how much time they spend at the Sukup practicing routine and form, but this was all about shooting with HR up.
