Today's Athletic article (Subscription required)

“From Day 1, I feel like that’s what they’ve said about this place: You can’t sustain it. It’s not doable,” Campbell said. “The more things change, the more they say it can’t happen. You’ve got to be uncommon here and be willing to do it in an uncommon way. That’s the thing I love about this place. I know this program is really what I believe, or at least how I believe you should run a college football program. We still get to do that here."

Since the Athletic doesn't think highly enough of Iowa State to have a writer dedicated to covering us, like they do for Iowa, I decided a long time ago this would be one less monthly subscription I'm going to pay for.

Anyway, I hope the article casted a positive light on the Iowa State football program.

I see why Iowa State doesn't have their own dedicated writer. We're no where near a national brand.

I little weird Iowa has their own but they have been a bit more successful than us. Not sure how they determined the schools they wanted writers for, though. Cincinnati? V-Tech? Colorado? Bit strange for those 3.

Anyway, it was a good article. More about Campbell, his culture, rebuilding, and what he's done. Max Olson is a pretty good guy for them and the Big 12 as a whole.

And that Dochterman cat was really banging the drum about the "assault" on the Iowa Band.

It is a really great article. Well worth subscribing for a month.

It gets into the coaching changes in a way I don’t think we’ve seen yet. And it talks about him staying in a way we definitely haven’t seen yet.

I feel you. It’s annoying. And lord knows none of us need another subscription. Hell if you add up just my Iowa State ones I have 5 or 6.

But the athletic does have some good stuff.

I re-upped in March for $20 for the year. They have to be hurting, but I found that if I cancel and let it go for a couple weeks or a month, they give me better deals.

Though the lack of an assigned writer is annoying, I like their coverage of the Twins and Vikings. Their national writers usually have a few articles I like, so in the end, it's worth it to me. Don't think I would ever go back for the $60/yr I originally paid.

Not to mention the overall Big 12 hate that Mandel spews. No way I would give that guy a penny. Plenty of ways to get access to articles that are behind a paywall, without supporting a company that hates Iowa State and the Big 12.

They're bundled with online NY Times subscriptions now, so I think they're a little better off than they were a couple years back.

David Ubben is the one you should really dislike. Mandel loves the P12 and isn't capable of being professional when writing about them, but Ubben has never liked the Big12, even when ESPN paid him to cover them. His hit piece calling the Big12 essentially the AAC was unnecessary and he got properly roasted when he posted the article.

Max Olson has written of number of good articles about ISU including the linked one. I enjoy his articles.

I shouldn't be breaking any rules since this portion is available to the public (I don't subscribe either). Just saving people from clicking to access/read this start of the article.

AMES, Iowa — So much has changed around Matt Campbell, but the head coach’s office has not. When Iowa State completed the $90 million expansion of its football facility in 2021, absent from the list of state-of-the-art features were new offices for the coaching staff. He saw no reason to relocate.

As he sat down on his same old leather couch in his same old office on a Wednesday morning in April, Campbell was reminded he has now entered Year 8 at Iowa State. He responded with a grin and added, “Shockingly.”

“It’s completely unreal, to be honest with you,” Campbell said. “In a lot of ways, it still feels like you’re in Year 1 or 2 or 3 of the program.”

Maybe that’s because he’s still just 43. Maybe it’s this turbulent era of college athletics. Or maybe it’s that parental feeling kicking in, that the days are long, but the years are short.

It’s hard to believe Campbell is still here, too.

His is the classic story of a rising coach who accepted a challenging job and inspired a team to start believing. The underdog started pulling off upsets, turning mediocre into magic on the journey to becoming a contender. He became a hot name in the coaching carousel, kept getting job offers and kept saying no.

The blueprint for The Process was clearly laid out throughout the rise: Build it the right way, win on the margins, be the best version of ourselves. Campbell surrounded himself with the right coaches and players and made it all come true. In 2020, the Cyclones reached the Big 12 championship game and won the Fiesta Bowl. They received preseason top-10 hype entering 2021 with Brock Purdy, Breece Hall and 19 starters returning. It was their big moment. They went 7-6.

Then came a rebuilding year with a young squad and a far more humbling 4-8 finish. Campbell faced a moment of truth. There were enough losses in a row and enough things going wrong to make a coach question whether he can fix it. Campbell made painful staff changes. He says he needed to “realign” his program.

I loved to hate Ubben back in the days when ESPN had open forums to post on.

Every fall when mine comes do I end up getting the deal for like $20 bucks. I refuse to pay the full $80 or whatever it is.

Just an FYI, you don’t need to subscribe to The Athletic. If you click the aA button on the browser bar and switch it to reader mode/“show reader,” the athletic hasn’t figured out yet that they need to block this, so you can read their articles for free. Now, I don’t condone stealing, but I rarely read their articles so it doesn’t make sense for me to subscribe, and this is how I’m able to read their articles without subscribing

If you want to read it without a subscription just open the link and print or save to PDF before scrolling down.
Edit: Or do this

This makes it seem like the Ted Lasso producers owe Matt some coin.
