Why is Matt Campbell still at Iowa State? To reset, rebuild the Cyclones’ magical rise

Interestingly, every single company I've ever worked for no longer exists in my 40 years of experience. Which, has embedded a dreadful lack of confidence in our business educational system. And, in every single employ, I saw drastic shortcomings in management philosophy. You see, my experience says young startups are motivated by innovation, engineering, and quality. But, once they reach a certain size, investors seek management which leverages 'margins'. That is the turning point, not only during my employment, but also in my investments over the same time period. What I'm trying to say is that our business philosophy is built on the wrong ideals. We should better strive to continue those initial motivational characteristics instead of marketing and margining. While we have those criticizing JP, my observations over his employment is that he continues to 'build' the product, not sacrificing quality along the way. Heck, I (an engineer) even pitched a 'marketing' idea for him clear to make money, but his focus was elsewhere. Good for him.
At the same time, inability or refusal to adapt as an organization grows can be just as damaging.

My brother worked for a very successful start-up toward the end of his career. The founder/owner was driven and involved and that was a big part of their success. But as the organization grew he still wanted to have his hands on every facet of the organization. So at some point he was standing in the way of the organization's continued success. He wanted everything to go through him and wouldn't trust those he'd hired and had proven themselves over the years as worthy of his trust. He would delay decisions that had to be made and would make decisions based on incomplete information because he couldn't be as intimately involved in every facet of the organization as when the organization was small. At some point as an organization grows some things have to change in order for an organization to be successful.

It is somewhat similar to the German war machine in WWII. While they were on the offensive early in the war they could have a master plan and Hitler could run things. As the war rolled on and they had to be reactive Hitler still wanted to control everything and he often stood in the way of his generals reacting to the situation on the ground. Many were afraid to make the decisions that had to be made because the Fuhrer wanted to control it. When the D-Day invasions occured at Normandy, Hitler stood in the way of releasing reinforcements to bolster the defenses because he was so sure it was a feint and the real attack was coming elsewhere. The commanders on the ground could tell by the scale of the attack that it was the real McCoy, but he wouldn't listen to them.

I know 100% he interviewed at USC and his wife shot that opportunity down.
Those that have the premium can see when I posted that:

Okay, so we have two sources who say that CMC had actual interest in the USC job.

I will cheerfully take that at face value, but the thought of Matt Campbell fitting in at USC is absolutely surreal to me. Not only the flash and glitz, the superficial culture of the area, and big money donors that think they run everything.

Of course, perhaps CMC thought he could change that.

I was told through a source that I know their source is a pretty high up staff member that Campbell told the staff “he had not been chosen for a job he would’ve left for”. Not saying you’re wrong at all, and maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle, but I’ve heard through a couple other sources that Campbell was ready to go to USC until they locked Riley up late in the process

Wait a second.... so CMC would have left if offered a job he actually wanted? Hmmm... that's what I've been saying all along. He's not some angel that is so dedicated to ISU that he's turned down all these jobs that he actually liked.

CMC is just like any other coach that would leave ISU in a second if offered something he wanted.

CMC is a good college football coach... and probably the best that ISU can hope for.... but he's not great IMO. I think we should hold on to him as long as we can because like I said, I'm not sure that we can attract anyone better. He's been able to upgrade our talent level here by quite a bit, but his teams here for the most part have under-performed IMO with the level of talent they've had. He's not had disciplined teams (always making the same stupid mistakes), he's not really developed players all that much (most have not improved while here, and some have even gotten worse), and he might be even more conservative than KF... which is saying something.

But with all that being said, I probably wouldn't trade him for any other ISU head coach we've ever had with the possible exception of McCarney. But that's also not saying much.... we haven't had many good head coaches here.
He also makes average at best, in game decisions. Big time coach's win games with "feel" for the game and what is needed. CMC is conservative at heart which is safe but not going to win a title. Conference or otherwise. I will wait for everyone to rain on my opinion.

Totally agree. If CMC was a great coach, his team wouldn’t be picked to finish last going into his eighth (or is it seventh?) season. And also wouldn’t be coming off a season where his team couldn’t get to a bowl game.

But as I’ve been saying…. I don’t want him to leave either because I don’t think we can likely do any better. What CMC has done here is probably the best we can hope for at ISU unfortunately.
