Why on earth would any team run a fake punt against isu?

sorry if this has been discussed and I'm late to the party.

Have we run a legitimate return attempt since the Iowa debacle? I swear we run safe return literally every time. That seemed like the dumbest play call in the history of Texas football. Perhaps in all of college football.

Tom Herman isn't a great coach. Plenty of people on this board are on records saying they wouldn't miss him when he left ISU.

True, but there were plenty more that thought he was pretty great for getting ISU to score something like 21 points a game. Meanwhile, ISU scoring about 21 points a game clearly showed Messingham was in way over his head.

Yes, we have “legitimate” return attempts. We’re actually third in the conference in punt returns in conference play.

Where are you getting your stats? according to big12sports.com ISU has 10 returns in 9 games this season. The only team with fewer returns (per game) is kansas with 3 returns in 8 games. ISU has a 6.2 yards per return. Good for 5th overall.

My take on Herman while he was here wasn't necessarily that he was a bad coach, but he had penchant for getting "too cute" at very inopportune times. And I think that tendency was on full display last Friday.

Sure, maybe he calls a beautiful series of plays that drives the ball down the field. But then on that critical 3rd and 2 in the redzone he overthinks it, forcing FG attempt. Individually, they weren't always back-breakers, but I felt those moments, collectively, prevented our offenses from realizing their full potential.

He knew he didn’t have the better team and was coaching for his job. He had to pull out all the tricks. That’s why he went for it on 4th down too.

i just viewed 4th and 1 as "we are texas, and you are beneath us". You see texas and ou do that **** all the time against opponents they consider to be lesser. Usually it works. This team isn't lesser though.

See I feel like they were dominating that game at times, but ISU just kept doing their thing until Herman made terrible calls. I can forgive the fourth down they failed on, that was most likely game over, but in hindsight it would have sent the game to over time had they gotten a field goal. The fake punt and passing on second down were his bigget mistakes.

agree. I understand the 4th down call. You've got a sr hoss that is a first down machine. Get that yard and its likely over. That fake punt was just stupid.

I bet Ehlinger has been stopped no more than two or three time in that situation in his career. The guy is big, physical and knows how to find a hole to get through. It was a good call, just better defense.

On that PDF, scroll down further to the section that reads (Conference Games).

He's arrogant. It was a stupid call and it certainly wasn't 'there' as Herman said it was. He wanted style points and biffed the dunk three times.

I disagree - I'm of the opinion the play was there, until our defender made a great play to stuff it. That being said, I agree it was a dumb decision based on the game situation.

On Cyclone Insider tonight, Randy Peterson talked about how Rory Walling said after Texas’ first punt, he phoned to the press box because he thought something like that might be coming. So it probably was “there” like Texas thought it would be...but Walling sniffed it out and made a hell of a play to stop it. It would’ve been a back breaker.
