Iowa State will always be elite in wrestling, no matter what. Our athletic department has made a commitment to wrestling and to many schools that have wrestling, it is an afterthought. Our name, this commitment and the good high school talent in the state will ensure we are at the top, along with Iowa, for the foreseeable future.

Saying we will always be elite seems risky, given that not too long ago we weren't exactly what I would call an elite program. If the Big 12 drops wrestling as a conference sport do you think Iowa State will even keep it? I would like to think so but it certainly is no sure thing. We field the minimum number of sports now so we would have to add something and I'm not sure there would be money left for wrestling.

Hopefully collegiate wrestling has sort of bottomed out and is on the upswing now. Having more competition at the top, while not short term beneficial to ISU, would be a good thing in the long run.

Wowsers, I'm off-site for a few days after starting a thread and it's like Jack and the Magic Bean's stalk. thanks for the opinions. Now, assuming that Texas has high school wrestling, how good is it? Although I suppose you run into the problem that if an athlete in Texas were good at both wrestling and football (and remember that my original thought was that the two sports are complimentary), would he ever choose to pursue wrestling in college? So maybe no Texas high school wrestler over 170 lbs. would go after a wrestling schollie. Thanks for the thoughts. :notworthy:
