Check Fairbanks! Really though I was joking. Just kinda wondering what they do up there.

I've been wondering this about Alaska and much of Canada over these last couple cold spells. I suppose it's like Atlanta shutting down for 12F though. Just don't have the clothing/equipment to regularly handle those temperatures.

Went to Lamoni in the 80's, never canceled for cold only for snow.

I grew up in Southern Iowa and now live in North Iowa, and let me tell you, the cold in Southern Iowa DOES NOT compare to North Iowa. Like at all. But ya'll are talking about the metro, so I'll let ya be.

Are you done asking questions? Yes, I know, because I get the school district voice messages alerting when school is closed. It says all schools and school offices are closed. The head day care person called me later and confirmed that all offices are closed.

Just because they say the office is closed doesn't mean that the administration took the day off. Perhaps they say the office is closed because they dont want parents to come in. Perhaps they dont have secretaries come in (since most are hourly employees and they have to make up that day, having secretaries come in increases costs) and don't want parents to come in?

My point is that you don't know if they were there or not. So why assume they worst?

It may not matter what type of vehicle it is in regards to its performance, but most of the discussion on this thread is about why schools delay/close due to very cold weather. What DOES matter about whether the diesel engine is in a tractor, semi, or school bus is how many people are involved. I think we all thank you for educating us on the fact that all diesel engines are the same.

There were posts stating the reason school was delayed is because they were worried about the busses.

And after over 100 posts, that worry still remains. Just because you are an expert on diesel engines, and you are able to start your tractor, it doesn't lessen the worry that maybe, just maybe, a few busses may have trouble starting on some of these very cold mornings.

It was colder this morning yet less schools were delayed.

I guess some Superintendents in your part of the state felt there would be fewer problems this morning. In the NE part of the state, it was colder this morning and the same number of schools were closed as yesterday. So, unless you are a Superintendent and/or you are in charge of a school, your opinion of the cold, and whether to delay or close doesn't matter. Neither does mine. These decisions are what Superintendents are paid for.

Since the danger was the wind chill does that even matter?
Considering that many superintendents in Central Iowa said the reason for delaying yesterday was that they were worried about the buses I would say it does. Windchill doesn't affect buses.

Correct, windchill only affects people. I'm pretty sure that most Superintendents don't make this decision on only one factor, like the ability of buses to start. Many other factors go into making these decisions, and unless any of the posters on this thread are Superintendents of schools, we really have no basis or input for these decisions being made. We just need to live with what they decide, and if they error on the side of safety of students, then I believe they made the correct decision.

I haven't seen where many superintendents said the only reason they canceled was because of buses so I don't know about that. And although they both can be dangerous there's a big difference between a wind chill of -30 and -15.
