Thanks for the update on Woody's status, if he's indeed 100% then my plan to get the running game going would be to hammer Jeff as much as possible as the punishing running back and bring SJ in for a change of pace.

I'm more old school as well too I guess in that I'd like to see them pound it a bit to reap the benefits later in the game when 2-3 yards turns into 5-6 a pop.

Woody is already at a disadvantage when he goes out there b/c most teams know what he's out there for. He comes in to pick up that tough 1-2 yards so they dial in to stop it. I think he would be more successful if he was able to see a whole series so they can't just focus on stopping the up the middle run. I also think when he is in we need to be in the pistol or under center so he can get some momentum hitting the line, not standing still waiting to see what JB is going to do with the ball. Just run him straight ahead somewhat like Iowa does with Weisman.

I agree 100% with this, one more thing I would add is a big guy like Woody benefits from more carries to wear down the defenders, you can't just put him in for one play and say he is ineffective and move on to the next back.

Given the personnel we have, I've been wondering how the O would do if we ran some traditional I? Have a package of 6-8 plays we can run and see if that change up improves the run game a bit(and perhaps the pass game).

I also agree with this. Jeff ran for I think 11 on his first carry, then we ran the zone read from our endzone and he barely got out of the end zone. Running the zone read from your own endzone is inviting disaster, and Jeff did well to get it out of the end zone. Why we don't get the qb under center both inside our own and the opponent's 5 yard line makes no sense. There are times when the qb needs to be under center not only for a qb sneak but to spin and give it to the tailback heading into the line. I don't know that Jeff would have fared better than SJ had he played a few series yesterday, but it certainly was worth trying as SJ's style was getting stuffed. I'm hoping our staff doesn't make the same mistake with Jeff that McCarney made with Ryan Koch. We didn't find out what a good rb Koch was until the last couple of games of his career when injuries gave him the opportunity to get some carries. I also didn't understand the panic we seemed to be in when we took over the ball on the 40 with the wind and over 4 minutes to play. We never lined up with a back in the backfield and pretty much told K-State we will pass. Just seemed to be more of a one minute offense than a 4 minute offense. I think Mess and Pope need to answer some questions about yesterday's offense.

Jeff was able and ready to play. Just to throw some info out here that others might not be aware of....the person responsible for picking the rb who plays each play is Pope. Not Mess or Head coach. Jeff feels frustrated because he gets put in for a play....makes positive yards, and instead of being able to stay in to contribute on another play, pope takes him out and puts in another back. There is nothing that Jeff cant do that the other backs can do. Jeff has been labeled a short yardage back, but he can run with the best of them. I, and others do not understand that fact that when shontrell is put in this year, and consistently shows that he doesnt gain any yards, or is to small to block, why he is left in there to do another, and another play(s)....all with the same result, OR he fumbles the ball. If you watch sj, he skips around in the backfield to much before he picks a hole. With jeff, the linemen create the hole as designed, and jeff can punch his way through. There is not enough time in this league to be bouncing around looking for a hole. Someone is going to grab you from the side if you wait to long.
With all that said, Jeff is as frustrated as the rest of you with him not getting the reps during the game. I have told him that he needs to consistently be standing by Pope, and be there when they need him. Be the one in which they can always depend on.

You could tell he was really wanting to get in there several times yesterday and we couldn't understand why he wasn't either.

Hope he keeps his head up and he gets some more snaps soon.

By the way, I heard he is being a very good sport with the band and some T-shirts they have planned. :)
