If the ISU offense struggles to score against TCU, Would you play Becht? Obviously, if this is something Campbell & Manning are planning, they would give Becht more snaps in practice this week.

I checked the ISU participation report and Becht has played 2 games so far, so playing him Saturday would not burn his redshirt.

WHY?

I mean, seriously, what would be the point? Destroy Dekkers' confidence? Let Becht play against a team playing for its playoff lives that just made Ewers look brutal? I mean - no.

This is one where the "veteran" takes one for the team . Its the reliever whose been rocked but you're not going to ruin the bullpen. I can't think of an upside to starting him. If you were going to do that you should have done it when there was a real chance of salvaging the season

I think you approach the game similar to how you did the first 11. If it is out of hand at any point in time, sure, put in one of the backups. But waiving the white flag isn't part of the Campbell culture. I think the team waived the white flag in the last game Matt's first season against WVU, but that is the only time I remember them rolling over and dying. I don't think they will Saturday either. I expect another one score loss if I'm being honest.

Yah pretty easy no, for a lot of the reasons already noted.

I'd like to see the skill position/OL young guys out there though, if they have less than 3 games played.

Get the freshman O Linemen out there. Let's see what Gaines can do opposite of X.

these kids are competitors. they want to play.

just because the season is lost doesn't mean we should play all of our 2s and 3s.

ISU beating TCU would be one of the most ISU things ever. A huge underdog story, that ultimately means little and wins us no favor with anyone of import.

Regarding the confidence factor, it depends on what Dekkers is told pre-game.
If he's told that Rocco will play the last couple of series (only if we're down big in the 4th) to get some experience, I don't have a problem with it.

I am not saying start Becht over Dekkers.

I am asking if Dekkers struggles against TCU, do they play Becht? So if the score is 14-0 TCU at half, do you start Becht for the 2nd half or make the change in the 3rd quarter?

The situation is a little different, but Campbell benched Purdy against Iowa and brought in Dekkers. If Dekkers' confidence is going to be ruined by benching him and playing Becht, then IMO Dekkers isn't the solution at QB in 2023 anyway.

There are three scenarios where Becht should see the field on Saturday:
  1. Dekkers is playing like Purdy did in that game against Iowa - playing flustered, making poor choices, turning the ball over and giving us no chance to win.
  2. Dekkers is injured.
  3. The game is out of hand in the 4th, like down 17+ points.
Outside of that, this staff would be starting Becht if what they were seeing in practice led them to believe he gave them the best chance to win. They've never been shy about the best players seeing the field.
