Would you support bringing Dan Gable back to ISU?

Do you have a large lake in Ames? he currently lives on a lake. I doubt at this point in his life if he would become your coach. Nothing to gain except pi$$ all whom he associates with off.

Ya, even though he might have a chance to come back to his alma mater, win a championship and get reenergized, he's better off go to HyVee and drinking coffee. At 60, guess life is over. I'd take a shot if I were him, if given a chance.

I would love a Gable or Brands type, but the fact is, they are Hawkeyes and they wouldn't leave Iowa for another school in a million years. If Brands would have been offered the Penn State job, he would have told them to go screw. Gable wouldn't work for ISU for a million a year. They are Black and Gold thru and thru.

Gable is possibly the best coach in organized athetics ever. Lombardi, Wooden, and Gable.

I would welcome him home with open arms, but it won't happen

I would at least ask Gable. If he turned ISU down, then I would ask if he had any recommendations. Gable still sees a lot of wrestling and knows who the best coachs are. He loves the sport of wrestiling and also loves the state of Iowa.

I used to think this about Cael.

That is the difference in mentality between the Gables and Brands type and the Cael type.

I am going to miss Cael because of what he meant to ISU. I will miss that he can call any recruit in the nation and demand respect.

What I won't miss is defensive wrestling. Trying not to lose, instead of trying to win. It worked for him because he was a tactition. He was the best ever at that. He just couldn't coach it.

What Brands/Gable teach is aggressiveness. They would knock their grandma over to win a match. I can't help but respect that additude with their wrestlers.

I want ISU to dominate. Take down after take down. We had wayyyyyy too much talent the last three years, not to win a title.

.............. and this is why, bear, in my opinion, Cael opted out. He knew he had the talent to win and couldn't get the job done.
There is far less pressure elsewhere, (and he isn't 100 miles from Iowa City.) His comment about recruiting is nothing more than BS.

I would ask as well. Even if he did not accept it might cause some friction between Gable and Brands.

As for the subject title: Of course any University would want Gable - he is the best wrestling coach of all-time, bar none. (that said he's also psychotic and from what I understand retired for his health & well-being)

We had a great up and coming coach that moved us from 13 years of NOT winning the conference to 3 straight. His three NCAA finishes (2nd, 5th & 3rd) are leaps and bounds better than what Douglas was giving us. (No NC for him either).

More people defend a horrible performace by Greg than a steller one by Cael. Crap people, absolute crap.

Newsflash..........CS left ISU, ISU didn't dump him. That is the absolute CRAP.

Pollard would have been slaughtered had he matched the salary PSU gave to CS. Regardles of what the lying SOS CS says, the salary is bigger and we already had him at the highest salary of all collegiate wrestling coaches..........which would include a coach about 2 hours east of Des Moines who has shown the last two years just how much better of a coach he is compared to the now even higher highest paid collegiate coach now at PSU.

Crap is right!

maybe, but arguably STILL the biggest name in college wrestling, despite Cael's perfect record. And maybe the most dominant coach in any sport of all time.
I agree with all that you don't have to love Gable but you have to respect his accomplishments. That being said hiring him would be like hiring Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden, maybe a better example would be Barry Switzer(I should be banned for typing his name on CF).

If Gable would consider then I'd say go for it. The odds of two extremes happening (Cael leaving and Gable coming home) would be crazy. I would say it's more likely Terry Brands would come here. However I did see the interview on KCCI last night with Gable and I would say he was completely caught off guard. There was a hint of intrigue, but I think it was just because he was not anticipating the question.

As far as Bobby - In my opinion no thanks as interm or fulltime coach. He helped recruit the seniors, but that also included Cael as an assistant. During his time we struggled to compete in the big 12 and were not even close in the national championship hunt.

I'm anti - Douglas and Bono. Their style is boring. The people talking about Douglas and Bono seem to have a short memory or did not watch any wrestling during their years coaching... Yes Bobby had national champions on the team and brought Cael here, but as a team it was hard to watch.

You need to do a little research. We were runner up in 1996, 2000, and 2002. I would say we were in the hunt.

I for one do not want Gable at any cost!! I went to ISU with Gable and knew him slightly. That is all I wanted to know him. He was always more interested in Dan Gable than anything else. His last match at the Nationals is a good example. All he needed to do was win and we had the NC, but no he was determined to go out in a blaze of glory with a pin. The result--he toke chances, got pinned and cost ISU the NC. He's an A number one *** and always will be.

ISU won the title in 1970 his senior year. His undefeated schedule was tarnished.

Did everyone think no way would Cael leave ISU? Did people think Dan McCarney would come to coach at ISU after being a hawkeye first? Things happen guys and gals, nothings set in stone, we know this full hand. Do I personally see it happening? Prolly not, would I welcome Gable as Iowa State's next wrestling Head Coach? Absolutely.
