Picked up a bag of Milorganite yesterday. Their pamphlet advises four yearly feedings with the first one around memorial day. Since I have not used it before would you guys put one down earlier than that?

It's around 6% nitrogen by weight . It works faster when the ground is warmer as microbial action is what releasems mostof the nitrogen . The bag rate is about 0.75 lbs N per thousand square feet. If you fertilized with crabgrass control then no need to put down anymore fertilizer for the next month.

That model makes it look like the best time to put down your pre-emergent crabgrass preventer is right about now, or within the next week.

@cyfan92 's suggestion of waiting until after this weekend's cold sounds good to me. Next week it is!!!

No reason to rush and put it down. Crabgrass doesn't germinate until at least 55 degrees with most germination happening above 70 degrees. I'm talking soil temps not air temp

Kentucky bluegrass germinates best when soil temperatures near 60 degrees Fahrenheit. So wait until after this upcoming cold snap passes before putting down your spring seeding
It's not going to hurt anything really throwing seed down now. Washout and birds eating are the main worries .

Just do it again at 1/4 or 1/2 volume if you want peace of mind.

I don’t have a victory yard I live on a ravine we have a lot of rocks, a lot of animals, and a lot plants/trees so I take some liberties but I don’t think you will destroy your yard with a little supplement.

Just put down another round in June. Look at the active ingredient though if you intend to seed in the Fall. Prodiamine is long lived in the soil so I don't recommend that for a June application but dithiopyr and pendimethalin are fine for a second application in June.

Here's a random lawn question:

We have a tree in our front yard and the roots are very exposed causing issues with mowing. Is there anything we can do short of putting down more dirt and sod to see if we can raise the lawn up?

Another tip with crabgrass control is make sure you get good coverage near sidewalks and driveways. You don't really need it in the shade either but you would still want to do a spring fertilizer app on shady areas. I like a crabgrass control with no nitrogen and avoid shady areas .I then go back and put my desired fertilizer down if needed.

I finally found something I agree with ArgentCy on. That said, I plan on putting my house on the market sometime this year and I have a nasty looking yard right now. Lots of dead spots and a trench I dug through the front year that needs seeding. Is now a good time to put down seed? Any suggestions on type? It's kind of a mix of shade.

Find a good sun/shade mix and something to cover it once you seed it down. Helps it retain moisture and will germinate faster.

Ya I use a hemp cover that’s about 4X4. Seed an area, tie the cover to some stakes, pound in the stakes. Once that germs and gets rooted then I move to a new patch.

Makes it easier to maintain and keep up on it. It if your whole yard is messed up that might not be practical.

Anyone close to mowing yet? My yard in the western suburbs of DSM is far from ready. New growth is just under 2 inches right now.
Maybe next week after recently putting down weed & feed, followed by the expected rain over the next couple days, followed by weekend temps in the 70's - for central IA at least.

A good thunderstorm with lightning (free nitrogen!) does wonders for the spring lawn.

The south end of my lawn, which gets the most sun is green and growing. The north part still looks dormant. I haven't mowed yet, maybe after the predicted storms and warmer temps.

Okay lawn care experts, what should I put on my lawn? I don't want to pay a company. Is milogranite sufficient, or should I add something else as well?

Putting down milorganite tonight. I am more excited to see how this goes than I probably should be.

Keep your windows closed for a few days. Stuff stinks to all hell. Getting harder (and more expensive) around Cedar Rapids than it used to be. Stores can't keep the stuff in stock.

Any suggestions on seed with 2 dogs 9n the house?

Depends. Did you get crabgrass preventer?

Probably 6-8 weeks.
