Short dump passes and some handoffs to pick up a 1st down or two. After getting close to mid-field, let it fly deep.

BTW, I don't view Bates as an option QB. He is elusive and will tuck and run if nothing is open on the pass routes, but I don't expect very many designed option run plays.

Dan McCarney called and said screw all you guys...were going to start with the halfback dive and surprise the defense....tfwiw Just saying

Then with 2 and 13 were going to throw an incomplete pass

Then with 3 and 13 were going to run a surprise qb draw...betcha that one will get the defense

/sarcasm/

Not to take this OT, but a question I've always had...

Shuttle pass

or

Shovel pass

I always thought it was shovel.

Edit: looked it up...they're interchangeable.

Shuttle reminds me of something in track like shuttle hurdle relay or even when in middle school running at drake we would run the 60 m shuttle relay.

I personally have always heard Shovel pass

I have never heard it called the shuttle pass before. I've been around a lot of HS and college coaches and to a lot of football clinics.
Also-I did a yahoo search for shuttle pass in football and all I can find is about shuttle busses.
Lots of stuff of shovel passes.

It must be like the pop vs. soda argument. It is pop by the way:smile: Atleast that's what I always get my fountain pop at Kum & go in

I'd probably do the same thing. Let him get in, hand it off a few times, get into the flow of the game, then let him start making some short throws to get his confidence up. But what do I know.

Sorry, guys, I have to agree. It's his first time in the game ever as a serious, full fledged quarterback, in front of 50K. Give him a play or two to get his feet on the ground--instead of floating six inches above it.

And women say that guys aren't romantic at heart.

I'd love to see Bates in the spread with JJ Bass in the backfield with him and run the dive / bootleg option with Bates reading the end. Having Bates and Bass in the backfield would be sweet because the defense would have to respect the speed of both.

That assumes that Bass gets to suit up on Thursday. Chizik talked on the call in show like the decision could go either way. He may be back on the team, but he has to start at the bottom. What was clear is that A-Rob, Scales, and Harris are all ahead of him on the depth chart so I don't expect many, if any, carries for Bass this week.

I would like to see the play fit in with the game plan we were using while Austin was in the game. I think the blocking schemes need to be very similar for a 2 QB system to work.

When Bates comes in the game I say we line him up wide left. Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll draw coverage from a mismatched linebacker. Loft one up and hope for the best. It may work.
