Finally saw it last weekend. It is a very good sequel but I think it's a stretch to say it is better than the original Top Gun. From a special effects/cinematography aspect it is better by default as the technology is so much better these days to capture the action shots they did but from a story line/plot aspect I still prefer the original. It did do a good job of paying tribute to the original while having it's own new story too.
This probably is the best movie to have come out in quite some time IMO. My wife and I were discussing when was the last time we can recall a movie that was a "must see" in the theater in recent memory and we don't even remember the last one we actually saw in the movie theater it's been that long. Looking forward to watching it again once its available to stream.
I am not trying to trash the original here, but most of its plot revolves around who is going to win a trophy (which Iceman and Hollywood eventually do) and then a relatively low-stakes (at least by the standards of the Cold War) mission providing air cover to a rescue of a disabled American ship. There are some heavy moments, obviously, with Goose's death being the main one and there to remind us as cool as military aviation is, it is incredibly dangerous and even the best of the best pilots can and do make deadly mistakes.
The plot is
Maverick is quickly established as performing a near-impossible mission to prevent a rogue state from advancing its nuclear program. The stakes are therefore automatically high given what success or failure means for the whole of humanity, and the mission itself is expected to engender heavy losses.
Like the original if you want, but the sequel has a real mission to focus and deepen the plot. Maverick isn't flying for a worthless trophy in the sequel; he's flying with millions depending on him.
