Wow. Seriously? A salesman for the Hawkeyes? If I recall, Zach's Masters press conference quote was, "I'm Zach Johnson, and I'm from Cedar Rapids, Iowa," not "I'm Zach Johnson, go hawks!"

He attends Hawkeye sporting events, so freakin' what? He's not outisde the stadium with a bullhorn peddling Zach Johnson Hawkeye merchandise, he's not the keynote speaker at I-club events, he didn't vandalize the billboard we put up in his hometown, he doesn't have tv commercials saying "I choose Iowa," and I'd be willing to bet he's a much bigger financial supporter of Drake than he is Iowa. A salesman for the Hawks? Really?

And the Matt Gatens reference is just stupid considering he physically plays for our chief rival. And before you say it, yes he's an Iowan, and may very well be a good guy, which is what I said in my previous post, but this is just obvious. Perhaps I should've put a 3 page disclaimer on that post so you could figure out what it really means.

If you can not see he is a promoter of the "hawk" brand, then there is not much I can do for you. ISU is behind in the arms race of college athletics more so because of promotion off of the playing field, then the physical play on it. It is likely he does little direct monetary harm to ISU, and even if one chooses to ignore the externalities, it is certainly logical for an ISU fan to not support him based on his lack of respect for ISU. It is not that he is a hawk fan, it is the fact that he is a "tavern" hawk.
I do not support people based solely on their location of origin.

At no time did I ever say I rooted for the guy for being born in the state of Iowa. I said that he's an Iowan, which isn't the same thing. I also pointed out that he's a pretty damn generous one. If he was born here and was a total ****, that would be completely different. Please read and take it all in before posting.

Maybe you ought to follow your own advice...your first post you called someone shallow for "cheering against" him. No one said they cheered against him, just didn't cheer for him. Huge difference. But hey...the internets are a great place to call people names...

He was born and raised here in the State of Iowa. It isn't his fault he was born in Iowa City thus making it a 99.99% probability that he would grow up to be a hawk fan. Now I hate the hawks as much if not more then most people on here but this guy is good for the reputation of the state. The guy has worked with the PGA Tour and it's officials to raise money for the flood victims in Iowa and I am sure many other organizations as well.

The guy is a class act and represents the state well which makes it all the more enjoyable every time he is in contention and they reference the fact he is from Iowa about 25 times per minute. He also reps a company located in Cedar Rapids on national tv everytime he makes it on camera which is good for the state as well.

Let us also keep in mind that there was a reason that he went to Drake.... because Iowa didn't want him. He is a hawk fan but I would say that with each victory and the more success he has it is just another kick to the twins in Iowa City that he was passed on by the U of I golf program.

You're wrong. Dead wrong. Iowa City has no twins.

Zach's a Hawk shill.
Well, ****. If I would have known that, I wouldn't have let my kid run around and play with his kid while I was in the hospital after giving birth to our second and Zach was visiting someone there at the same time. :jimlad:

Oh crap! Now your kid's a hawk shill, too! (do I really need jimlad here?)

Congrats on your second, even though it was probably a while ago.

I bet some of these guys would vote straight cardinal and gold if it was an option on a ballot

I would!

I'm from Minnesota, so even though I bleed Cardinal & Gold, I have no particular reason to cheer for someone because they're from Iowa.

If they're a hawk fan, then I really have no reason to root for them; truthyfully, I am more compelled to cheer against them.

I called Zach a Hawk shill and people think I hate him for it. He is and I don't.

I just looked this up: He is over 16mil for his career. Pretty impressive.
When Zach first got on the tour I remember reading a story about him where it said a bunch of guys invested in him to get him started. I wonder if they still get a share of his earnings or if he has paid them off.

there were 12 original sponsors from Elmcrest in CR. it was figured that Zach would need $50,000 per yr total to cover travel, entry fees, etc. the sponsors then purchased "shares" of the $50k. this was all done in the years before Johnson qualified for the PGA tour. the sponsors made a profit each of the years, except one. they averaged their money back plus 17% each year. so they didn't make a ton back, but the point of doing it was to get him started on his way up the ladder. they did this for 5 years.

Thanks. Yeah, she's 7 months old now.

Honestly, I don't care if Zach Johnson roots for the Hawkeyes or not, but I do think it's cool he's from Iowa. The hub and I just got a kick out of our son playing with Zach's son at the hospital. They had a great time running around. I don't think the nurses probably appreciated it, though.

The guy grew up just down the road from U of I, what do you expect? I believe he will win a major in the next couple of years.

Football season can't get here fast enough.

We've resorted to arguing over the supposed favorite collegiate team of a pro-golfer.

And still have 3 months to go.

My allegiance is to ISU, not the state.

I assure you, when ISU has a PGA tour golfer - that person will most likely be about every ISU fan's favorite.

Until then - Zach does pretty well for most of us.

Out of curiosity, who do you pull for?
