places to explore:

go to boone, iowa and explore the hills along the west and the east side of the des moines river....

also go west of boone to the west side of the des moines river. on the above, use old highway thirty for your exploration..
when i was in grad school we took old hiway 30 thru boone and went to the west side of the des moines river.. then we went north and found an old time tavern that was about 12 miles north of old hiway 30.
the bar had to be an early iowa bar because it had hitching rings for horses. we used to go over there for a cool brew on saturday afternoons. i do not know if the place still exists or not . i have not followed that old trail for years.. i would like to know if it still exists.

if you enjoy morel mushrooms, the hills along the des moines river valley are a great place to hunt morel mushrooms on or about the last week of april or in the first week of may... boone has some interesting trees, plants, wild flowers, birds if you are interested in those things. there many interesting things around ames,too..

something to do in ames during winter chritmas vacation is get into the heat tunnels
underneath the campus. we did that one winter when we had to stay in ames for wrestling practice . the tunnels are a real maze. what else is there to do in ames over christmas. coach nichols would kick you off of the team if he caught you drinking..nichols was a great coach. wished he was still alive.

Is it this?

I guess the strangest place was where I lived (for 1 year) 22 years ago..renting a bedroom upstairs on Howard Ave.

The good? near Thumbs, Duggan's, Monty's barber.

The strange?
shared bathroom has some bacteria growth---wasn't cleaned in a decade.

renter of another room one night next to me sounded like he was throwing a female visitor through the wall

Downstairs rented out to Animal Science majors..one gamey renter/chick downstairs occasionally ended up in my doorway upstairs, wanting to do more than talk

Animal Science geeks downstairs and their shed out in the backyard, with a live falcon inside

But you never use them!!!

Can I have them?

I was scared away after I lost everything on the pinstripe bowl. I'll probably get back to using them with the tournament coming up. I hate losing what I have. My wife goes to the casino with a twenty and I have panic attacks.

Kind of cool old train bridge next to riverside park. on 6th street, just south of the skate park and the current train bridge. if you walk on the bike path that is just south of 6th street, you'll come to the old rr bed that keeps going straight. walk about 100 feet down that and there's the train bridge. I don't know that it's strange or anything special, but just kinda cool.

If its the one I think you are talking about, my friends and I used to practice rock climbing on its limestone piers. We actually had a route figured out all the way around one, and would do laps until we couldn't hang on anymore. Really improved our abilities.

The bridge here.

My assumption is that it's the old Dinkey line, or that the University power plant used to be fed coal from trains before they started trucking it in. I'm gonna go with Dinkey.

For those who haven't read this entire thread - DO NOT try and explore the steam tunnels. The ISU Police are not as lenient as they used to be about people going down there. All have alarms and "I didn't know I shouldn't be down here" doesn't get you out of it.

Personally experience?

I will say I've seen the map with every alarm and camera for the steam tunnels and it is fairly well protected. Occasionally a raccoon gets in there and cops are sent to check it out.

I'm thinking it might be to the north of your arrow and we climbed on the west side of the creek. It was about 30 years ago though.

There's an entrance to the steam tunnels in my brother's old room in BWR. We snuck down there a couple times, as its right at a spot between two alarms. If you go about 20 feet, you can see them, so its pretty easy to avoid setting them off, but you can't go very damn far either.

Yeah, well, i'm gonna build my own tunnels, with blackjack, and hookers. In fact, forget the tunnels.
