Coach Messingham, I've seen both pluses and minuses ...

Mess is average. Not bad, not good. Runs a super boring offense that needs a QB to be out of this world good

Mess will probably be okay as an OC in that type of offense. He said/did some stupid things at ISU and that's going to follow him. Part of his down fall was Paul Rhoads. He micromanaged the offense when he should have stayed completely out of the way. Mess isn't going to wow you. The plus side is that you'll never have to worry about another school coming in and taking him away.

I didn't like Mess as a playcaller. We also didn't have near as much talent when he was here as we do now.....

Did Mess have anything to do with bringing in the talent level he was coaching?

You definitely have to consider the possibility that the system was failing when Herman couldn't get anything going either

Can't give Herman a pass as he was resigned to thinking you couldn't bring the talent needed to win to Ames. CMC has obviously shown otherwise. Even without a change in airports.

The thing I remember with Mess was the inconsistency. There were weeks we would march up and down the field, and there were weeks we couldn't string together positive plays. That and the constant QB carousel.

What's your take on him as an offensive coordinator?

There's a lot of blaming Rhoads, but there was a massive drop off from Tom Herman to Mess, and I assume Rhoads micromanaged both. Mess is a below average OC at best. I don't know that he's the worst we've ever had (Steve Brickey), but he's not good. At all.

Really?

Campbell played at Mount Union and they won 3 national championships while he was there in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Campbell also won national championships as OC at Mount Union in 2005 and 2006.

I believe I said "previous" coaching staff. We're RIFE with championships with our current regime.
