SIAP. Seems like a nice deal for Big 12 members

"The 16-team College Basketball Crown tournament will feature schools that failed to qualify for the men’s NCAA Tournament with two squads each from the Big Ten, Big 12 and Big East receiving automatic bids. Not coincidentally, all three conferences have college basketball television agreements with the network. The rest of the field will feature at-large participants but will only include men’s teams."

The same Matt Norlander who had us losing to Washington State. He's a Big East/10 homer.
Not to mention he works for CBS. Not sure how impartial he can be

With teams opting out of the NIT, this seems strange. All in Vegas?

Sounds like that WBB tourney they added in addition to the NCAA and NIT. I guess I don't really see the point. But, anything to extend the season is fine by me - I have nothing between end of CBB and beginning of CFB.

Good alternative to the NIT. Not run by the NCAA. I would mind if eventually this just replaced the NCAA tournament. Let’s create the basketball version of the CFP. If the ACC and SEC don’t want to get on board, that’s fine.

You realize 2/3 leagues in this is the….Big East and Big 10?

I’m pretty meh on it. Hope we never play in it.

So given both this and the NIT give 2 autobids to these 3 conferences, have these conferences signed a deal with this new tournament to send those teams there first, or will teams be choosing?

I don't like it. I don't like how TV is dictating things like this. Plus, the best NIT teams are the G5 ones that dominated during the season and got upset in their conference tourney. Are they part of this Fox NIT? Nope.

This would be better as a Big East-Big10-Big 12 in-season challenge tournament.

EDIT: I do see 2 automatic qualifiers for the Big East-Big 10-Big 12 and then an invite. Still, not a good idea. ESPN will do their own NIT tournament with ACC-SEC and then invite.

The fact that this tournament would be 3 weeks after each of the teams participating lose in their conference tournament is very, very dumb. Some rosters might have less than 5 guys by that point.

Norlander is taking the "too many bowl games" guy persona and moving it over to hoops.

Teams could almost play in the NIT and this tournament assuming they don't make it to the NIT final 4

If we use this year as an example my understanding is Oklahoma would have been in this tournament as a Big 12 representative. Oklahoma barely has a roster as of today.

I *think* what the tv suits are thinking is this:

Non stop bball during the conference tourney’s, build up when the bracket is released, huge excitement for the first 4 days of the tourney and then a hard stop until the second weekend. I believe this tourney will start the Monday of sweet 16 week. They are betting we are craving ball and we will watch.

Except it’s going to be middle to low tier teams who aren’t very good.
