Could this in part be driving the big and sec discussion, as well? Not, just their money grab, but working to ensure the money is there.
I'm going a bit conspiracy nut here, but I think all this is ESPN, SEC & B1G just virtue signaling

"We're trying to fix things"

"See, we're working on a contract with the CFP"

"The NCAA/CFP is mucking things up"

"We're trying to save everyone"

& when they think they've convinced everyone that they are the good guys, the SEC/B1G split with ESPN in tow to create "super league" - or, at the very least, make the barrier of entry so high that only the SEC & B1G can survive

Sure reads a lot more like ESPN getting cold feet on the price tag and would like an excuse to pull the offer and maybe come back lower, or even get split rights at a lower cost.
