Not exactly sure.
Comment on the new format that they put in. Wow, it was a crapshow where I was at. I remember my oldest wrestling a few years ago and sectionals were 8-9 teams, 1-2 was usually light in the roster (1A), but nearly everyone had quarterfinals matches, a few pigtails if 9, and then usually there were at least 3 solid wrestlers at each weight. Then they went to districts where it was an accomplishment to make it to state. Yesterday I saw several brackets where it was byes into the semis (one had four wrestlers total in it) so you had to win one match to make state.

The guys in Boone need to understand that every time they mess with this, they make it worse. IMO, it would be best to shave a weight or two or go to 2 classes instead of adding 50% more wrestlers to state. They watered it down for what?, I know the answer, more funds.

I had no idea the format changed; more wrestlers at state is a watered down product!

Just looked at brackets; how was it determined who received a first round bye?

Instead of byes they should’ve had round one losers wrestle again in later that round. Winners wrestle once that round and the wrestlers that loose two matches are eliminated.

(I may not be explaining this very clearly…)

At the completion of round one then the net result of the number of wrestlers would be the same, I think.

They seed all 24 wrestlers. They want the two best in the finals they say, the two they think are best anyway. First round is one front and back I believe. Same for second day is what I understand.

Cut two weights or go two classes and it would be much better.

What’s your opinion on possible weights to be eliminated? In my day the upper weights were 171, 189 & HWT. (I cut from 225 to 189 and had to wrestle HWT before Christmas. I would’ve loved the 195 class)

182, 195, 220 & HWT seems maybe too much today; however, I don’t know if kids are just that much bigger now that justifies those weight classes.

Just click on any of the trackwrestling links on the far right of the table for any wrestler from Iowa, should take ya to the brackets. My personal favorite weight to watch this year is 195 in 3A, that's gonna be a great weight

When i was in school the uppers were 171, 189, 215, HWT(275?)

I saw a thing on Reddit or Intermat the other day that NFHS was giving states the option of adopting one of 3 weight spreads starting in 2023-2024? I’ll try to find the link.

Thx, I would enjoy the link.

Wow - had no idea 215 was class. That would’ve been beautiful

Kids may be bigger but numbers are still light up there. Kid I know wrestled a little in JH so he’s very green. He weighed 214 (no cut) and is an average type physical kid. He wrestled HWt and was a .500 wrestler just hitting the mat. If learns to use his quickness he will be a .700 wrestler next year. You can kill an upper weight.

I would then blend out a lighter weight. 138-160 are your best wrestlers and athletes in general. Leave those 4 alone

Why are we removing weights? Because the state tournament might be a little watered down? Who cares?

The only thing that should factor into any decision is whether or not it increases participation in the sport. Cutting weight classes has the opposite effect.

The participation rate has been declining the last several years if not more. They added weights and now many duals are forfeit parades. We are near the point where just going out puts you at state.

Right now there are too many teams with 2-6 wrestlers. Practice partners become a problem. Then since numbers are light the teams will close and not function
