Pro Football Focus has graded their 2019 draft eligible players. Montgomery is the #2 RB and the #6 player overall.

"David Montgomery, Iowa State, 92.1 overall grade: Don’t let the traditional stats fool you, Montgomery did as much independently of his offensive line as any running back in the country last season. He led the nation with 86 missed tackles forced on the ground while ranking second with 23 forced misses as a receiver."

It's an amazing stat. Let's hope that this year there is less "independence" of the offensive line, and that David encounters far fewer FMTOs (you heard it here first: Forced Missed Tackle Opportunities - eat your heart out, Phil Steele!) this season. If run blocking can become at least average, David's traditional stats could go through the roof!

CBS has him going #14, 1st RB in their 2019 mock draft. Way too early obviously, but we better enjoy watching him this year because it's likely his last here.

Cool to see DM listed on so many 1st-round projections.

Serious inquiry about CBS projection -- I won't claim to know much about draft prospects (certainly not a year in advance), but how common would it be to have only 3 QBs selected in the first round?

What’s all the fuss. He still has a couple years to play at ISU.

Leveon Bell ran a 4.6, and is doing alright. David runs very similarly, so I don't see that being a huge issue.
That's the same comparison I had in mind. Bell very rarely breaks off a long run, but he still is considered an elite running back, because he consistently keeps the chains moving.

PFF has been high on Montgomery for a long time.

If the offensive line can take another step forward he will be an All American this fall.
There's the rub. If the ground game can make the improvements and become a threat that forces defenses to adjust we have the WR's and QB's to take advantage of it. The offense could finally be "explosive" and take that leap to the next level. Coupled with our defense the potential of next seasons team...I'm going to have to lie down for a moment.

One other bit of perspective. There are very few other RBs being rated anywhere near him. He isn't just somebody's favorite out of 20 great players. He is in an elite group of the very top players according to the analytics. And that is without factoring in the quality of our offensive line last year.
