Can't help but feel bad for Kilgore..3rd at the Olympic trials then comes back from his redshirt year to go undefeated til it matters most!

I'll do a postmortem on the season soon. But for now I just want to congratulate the wrestlers on their performance this weekend. Matt Gibson most of all. That man went on a tear this weekend and wrestled miles above what I thought he was capable of. We return 2 All Americans and an R12 guy next year. I wouldn't trade out lineup next season from 165-197 for any other team in the nation. There is a lot of work left to do but ISU wrestling is once again a force to be reckoned with.

I love our guys, but let's not get carried away. Just think of two that were here/committed. I think we could make room for Matt Brown and David Taylor. Throw in Ed Ruth and whoever replaces Wright at 97, I think PSU has a significant edge.

I don't know jack squat about wrestling, but I'm glad Taylor lost to Dake. Never liked Taylor since he left us with Cael.

Judoka thanks for the updates and coverage this weekend! Great finish for the wrestlers from where we started the season. If there isn't already a thread I'd like to have information on our recruiting and lineup for next year. Never too early.

Off the top of my head I'd guess the lineup next season will be:
125: Ryak Finch
133: Shayden Terikuna (I'm really hoping to see Meeks redshirt)
141: Luke Goettl/Gabe Moreno
149: Gabe Moreno/Luke Goettl
157: Logan Molina/Trent Weatherman
165: Micheal Moreno
174: Tanner Weatherman/Mikey England
184: Boaz Beard/Mikey England
197: Kyven Gadson
285: Cole Shaffer or a JuCo

Would Quean Smith be an option at HWT?

If Quean is healthy, eligible, has his weight under control, and is as good as advertised he will be a solid heavyweight for us for the next four years.

However, until I actually see him take the mat in a Cyclone singlet I'm not going to get my hopes up.

What about Swope at HW? I doubt Shaffer is a better option at this point. Also, I think there is zero chance that England can take Weatherman's spot. The depth is great there though.

Really excited for 2 years from now, an optimist view could say title run with the current talent on the team, not to mention any surprises that may come in new recruits. I've been a season ticket holder, center mat for ~ 10 years, don't post a lot but follow our program pretty close. First year I can remember after nationals that I was pumped for next year - we exceeded expectations. Most of you probably don't remember but Douglas and Cael brought in tons and tons of talent and we got to watch them not improve over 4 years and always had a disappointing nationals. If you want to challenge that statement start naming the wrestlers that improved greatly over their tenure.

125 - Ryak Senior Year if not AA - R12
133 - Meeks coming of Redshirt - R12
141 - Goettl Senior Year if not AA - R12
149 - Gabe Sophomore hopefully similar to Mike - R12 or better
157 - Molina Junior qualifies - maybe win a few matches or better
165 - Mike Senior Year - Title Run
174 - Tanner Junior Year - Title Run
184 - England - Junior Year - R12 or better????
197 - Gadson Senior Year - Title Run
HWT - Smith - Sophmore - qualifies maybe win a few matches

I don't think I'm taking too much of a leap to say we'll have solid wrestlers at each weight and more than 1 wrestler that should be in contention for a title. I think KJ has done a great job rebuilding the program from the death blow that Cael, JP, and the fans dropped on us. (Yes, I think Cael was selfish for leaving and didn't realize what we had done to give him his head coaching job, which led to JP being arrogant that Cael wouldn't leave and not put money into the program and our fans for thinking that we can sustain a top program with the amount of donations that come into the CWC). In the end I think it'll all work out - we have what I think is the perfect coach for us, JP realizes that wrestling is important for ISU and we have better facilities and I hope that our fans start putting their $$$ where their mouth is.

Possible, he beat up on a bunch of JuCo and D-III guys this year, but didn't do great against D-1 competition. Really there are probably any of 5 or so guys that could fill the roll. The best option is Quean Smith being able to wrestle and being as good as advertised. Anybody else is probably just a warm body.

I think it looks like this
125 - Finch and Larson
133 - Meeks, I don't think he redshirts and maybe Bauer
141 - Goettl (if he don't move up), Bauer, Terukina
149 - G Moreno
157 - Molina or maybe a transfer
165 - M Moreno
174 - Ta Weatherman
184 - Beard and England
197 - Gadsen
Hwt - Smith, Swope and Shafer

Before we get too off topic, he's a breakdown of our points:

  • Luke Goettl - 0 (0 advancement, 0 bonus)
  • Max Mayfield - 0 (0 advancement, 0 bonus)
  • Mike Moreno - 14.5 (9 advancement, 5.5 bonus)
  • Tanner Weatherman - 2 (2 advancement, 0 bonus)
  • Boaz Beard - 2.5 (1.5 advancement, 1 bonus)
  • Kyven Gadson - 12 (9 adancement, 3 bonus)
  • Matt Gibson - 10.5 (7 advancement, 4 bonus)
Total of 13.5 bonus points. That's what got us to 11th place. Without those bonus points we would have finished in 20th place. I believe we were one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the tournament when it came to bonus points.

By session:

  • Pigtails: 3
  • Session 1: 6
  • Session 2: 2.5
  • Session 3: 9
  • Session 4: 21
  • Session 5: 0
  • Session 6: 0

We return 31 of the 41.5 points next season. 31 points would have put us in 18th place this year. We can really put our finish on Mike Moreno and Matt Gibson. Going into this weekend I was hoping to get 4-5 points total out of the two of them. But those two together scored 25 of our team points. Those two guys wrestled out of their minds. Gibson especially. This was one of the toughest and deepest Heavyweight brackets in years and he AAed.
