That column didn't say this outright, but the theme is lurking beneath the surface: The problem with 16's at play-in is it's like making teams qualify for a tournament auto-bid twice.

If there's going to be 4 play-in games/First Four/opening round, it should be all at-large teams. That was the main motivation for expansion in the first place — reduction of "bubble controversy" that often involved power-conference teams. (Because a 30-plus game season isn't time enough to prove yourself, I guess).
