Refereeing was bad but at some point this falls on Otz a bit. The players are the ones playing, but when guys like Lipsey, Grill, Gabe, etc continue to put themselves in position to pick up cheap fouls when it's clear how the game is being called, he either isnt making it a priority or isn't effectively getting through to his place players. The body fouls outside the arc, the senseless reaches in the lane, and the assinine fouls we commit when we refuse to concede easy buckets are just ridiculous.

Want to win conference? Want to do well in March? You either adapt or 'die'. We had at least 10 legit mind numbing fouls. Yes there were several brutal calls, but if we don't commit those 10 we have 3 or more players still in the game. That's our fault, not the refs.
clear how the game was being called? For the first 10 minutes they let WVU play with a physicality they wouldn't let ISU come anywhere close to playing

Oh shut the **** up.

We damn near beat them with the refs doing everything they could to take us out of the game. We shouldn't have to beat a team by 20 to come away with a W
Which we have done on other occasions this season, been a terrible year for the refs. Luckily we're just so good we can overcome it a lot of games.

WVU is also one of the best teams in the country. It’s just they play in the Big 12 so their record doesn’t really reflect it.

They might be one or two spots below us on the sacred KenPom now.

Gotta love our fans…half of them worshipping KenPom and a few ref apologists acting like the #19 team on KenPom is the worst team in college basketball.

If the refs wanted to call the game that way, whatever. But there was a 10+ minute stretch in second half where WVU wasn’t called for a single foul. Has WVU ever gone 10 minutes in a game without being called for a foul ever under Huggins?

More importantly, they never go more than two minutes without actually committing obvious fouls. Like drag a guy to the ground obvious.

They're #15 right now. 3 spots above us.

Thanks for making my point. It's not the first, 2nd , or 3rd time we've failed to adjust to how a game is being called. At some point this team has to realize it's part of that problem.

Saying the refereeing was terrible (should be reprimands) doesn't absolve us from not adjusting. Z

Yeah...and some on here think we're good enough to beat them when they foul more than us yet nearly our entire team gets fouled out of the game. Like we can just magically cover 11 foul difference that takes 1/3 of our team out of the game. We can't "try harder" because we already absolutely dominated them rebounding. We can't "take care of the ball" because we had less turnovers. We can't "make shots" because we did make more FGs. It boils down to exactly ONE thing.

Miracle we were within 10. These games at their place have been a joke since they joined the league.

Play Harder!!!!! well...we outrebounded them by quite a lot.

Take care of the ball!!!!!! well...we had less turnovers.

Make shots!!!!!! well...we made more FGs than WVU.

At some point it's easier to just look at the foul discrepancy.

That was pretty insane. I see people saying we get that same treatment at home. No we don’t, for starters we haven’t had many close ones at home and none with that foul discrepancy or overturning of calls.
Yeah I have read comments that opponents get that treatment at Hilton. I would like someone to share just one example of a comparable foul scenario.

Those things have NOTHING to do with what I said.

Again, if we adapt to the game and quit putting ourselves in position to if not outright committing 10 stupid fouls the bad calls/ticky tacks are less of an issue. We didn't do it tonight and we really haven't adjusted on the road all year long. At some point the team (talking to you Grill) can quit bodying, reaching, and fouling on easy buckets senselessly or they can continue and let the combination of dumb fouls, legit fouls and bad calls take them out of the game.

Corralling loose balls and eliminating dumb fouls probably wins is the game by 8. We didn't do those things and lost. That's our fault, not the officials.

Ah yes. The long game of losing 4 one possession road games because you don't want, what, the refs to call even worse games against you?

This is the part of TJ's philosophy that is maddening.
there's absolutely no guarantee that TJ getting after a ref will result in even calls.....we're Iowa State....we won't ever get the favorable calls

Otz needs to tell Jaz that kicking the guy with the ball with your knees is not winning tournament basketball.

"But Coach, you told me to !!!! "

Adapt to what game? Making sure they tuck in their shoulders on every screen or risk a flagrant 1?

Don't defend too close because when the opponent throws an elbow into your chest and gets called for an offensive foul......they might review it and change the call to a defensive foul?

Make sure when the opponent pushes you from behind on a rebound you don't lose your pivot foot.......or you will be called for a foul?
