HOW DO YOU SOLVE THIS PUZZLE?
To give people time to see this thread, there are two parts. PART ONE is below. I'll post PART TWO (by editing this post) on Thursday (June 4). The clue from PART ONE will help you solve PART TWO.
WANT A HINT?
To keep this thread visible, post something random (pets???) in this thread. If you do that, you can ask me a single question via private DM about PART ONE that I can answer with yes or no. One question per account.
That will give you a head start on PART TWO. Then once PART TWO is released, the first person that posts the solution in this thread wins.
THE PUZZLE:
PART ONE - What does this mean?
The year after the crash, Paul came to explain.
Aloysius tried too, but ignore the law of Latium.
From William's forest came intricate plates.
The smell of lavender preceeded the prize.
Now mull over the Colonel's past.
For that is where it comes from.
PART TWO:
The cross means another, says your kin.

BONUS CLUE TO HELP FIGURE OUT PART ONE:
Remember the alphabet was once smaller before it died.
BONUS CLUE 2:
Answer is not related to Iowa State or sports at all.
BONUS CLUE 3 (REFERS TO PART ONE) - FIXED TYPO (UNDERLINED):
The false eighth moon went dark thrice.
BONUS CLUE 4:
The forest was planted hundreds of years ago.
BONUS CLUE 5:
The crash didn't involve physical items.
BONUS CLUE 6:
The first two lines of PART ONE refer to a book.
BONUS CLUE 7:
The smell = synesthesia.
ONE CLUE HAS BEEN SOLVED:
Someone has correctly guessed that the first two lines in this puzzle refer to
A Dictionary of Color book by Paul and Aloys (1930). I go into detail more in
my post #177 here. As mentioned elsewhere, the book has no bearing on the final answer, it's simply the first step.
The lavender is elderly.
Since the correct book was figured out, I'll add "William's forest" = reinforcing the correct book, since it was published in PA and Pennsylvania's name actually means (William) Penn's forest/woods.
My post #196 gives a bit more context.

BONUS CLUE 10:
Comprehension is difficult on an empty stomach, why not try Indian food?
BONUS CLUE 11:
Sid said the hike from Egypt to Yosemite is short, then China is next.
