14. Iowa State Cyclones

Swing game: vs. Arizona, Sept. 27

The Hawkeyes have a Big 12 game to open the season against Kansas State, so there is no easing into the season -- and that's before factoring in Iowa coming to town Sept. 6. So Cyclones fans won't have to wait long before having a decent sense of what to expect this year. Let's go ahead and assume they beat South Dakota and Arkansas State and could be 2-2, 3-1 or 4-0 headed in the fifth game against Arizona. The result of that game against the Wildcats would significantly shape expectations for the rest of the way. -- Bonagura

Chris Williams on VSiN with Tim Murray

On Monday, our own Chris Williams hosted VSiN College Football Betting Podcast’s Tim Murray and then was a guest on Murray’s podcast.

I think many of us may undervalue the quality of Chris’s contributions. We may be too familiar with him and he is often so casual and goofy. However, he really holds his own with one of the betting industry’s best on these podcasts. It is really impressive and he is indeed a “big shot.”

Should I replace furnace and AC together?

Seen some good house threads in here lately, so figured I’d start another one to check CF’s pulse on my situation.

We moved into a new house in January. Furnace and AC are from 1995, so 30 years old. Couple of weeks ago AC stopped keeping up due to a leak on the condenser. Technician was able to weld on the coil, but did his best to “patch” it up with foam spray. If the leak is small then it may be fine for years, but I have a feeling the issue will be back later this summer or next year at the latest. Anyhow, I have them coming back late this afternoon to look at my system and give me a quote. Options may be.

1) Replace coils on the unit.

2) replace the AC entirely (pretty sure the current unit is also undersized for the house).

3) replace furnace and AC due to their age and if you are going to do one May make sense to just do both so that one unit is not new and the older is 30 years old.

Thoughts?

What if you could go back in time and relive any Iowa State football game in history?

With newspaper recaps, occasionally digitized programs and ticket stubs, photos of most teams (as well as photos from the games) and occasional video footage, this series might continue!

If there is interest to learn about games beyond the 1892-1949 time in Cyclone football history, do let me know.

Need Info/Guidance on Prepaid Funeral Plans

Not a fun topic, but...

As I prepare to enter my 8th decade on this planet I need to get this taken care of.

I have my plot and my will/trust done.

I don't really know how it works. I don't want to walk into a Funeral Home knowing nothing.

Any dos and don'ts or pitfalls to watch for. Or recommendations.

Not necessarily specific local providers.

TIA

Anyone have a Moen Smart Sprinkler controller?

Our yard has widely-varying moisture needs because lawn/garden/flower beds/raised beds/sun/shade/etc. So, being it's 2025 with AI and all, I figured technology could help with this, and I ran across the Moen Smart Sprinkler controller, which is interesting because you can add a WiFi moisture sensor to each zone which can adjust the watering in that zone based on soil moisture. It's not that expensive. However, I checked the reviews that this controller gets on various sites that sell it, and it gets very mixed reviews. On Home Depot, the majority of the 2025 reviews are 1-2 stars, but it also gets frequent 5 stars on other sites. The biggest complaints are that the controller often falls off the WiFi and has to regularly be rebooted, and also the app/controller is buggy such that it doesn't water the zones as expected.

Just curious if anybody here has one, and what your experience has been.

Road Game Rankings

Fun podcast by Williams & Blum last Wednesday. Login to view embedded media
I loved hearing them talk about this year's football road trips. Here are their rankings based on the Williams & Blum Fun Meter:

#1 Jonesboro for Arkansas State.
#2 Boulder for Colorado.
#3 Covington, Kentucky for Cincinnati.
#4 Fort Worth for TCU.
#5 Stillwater for Oklahoma State.

So, what do you think? Do you agree? Disagree? How would you rank them? What would you recommend for the road trips?

K-State isn't included because the Ireland trip is in its own category.

hot tubs

toyin with the idea of getting a hot tub. already have pad for it. any opinions on brands you like or that I should avoid? is saltwater the way to go these days? is used worth the risk? I'm not bad with plumbing, but I hear they're kind of a pain to fix.
probably looking for something in the 7x7 or 8x8 size range.
