Senior Longshots

Because of the Keegan Moore conversation. Every year there are some guys who ball out their senior year and make the podium or make a run to the finals: in 2018 Chance Marsteller and Ronnie Perry in the same year got 4th and 2nd.

  1. You get 5 guys, lowest score wins.
  2. Any combination of guys.
  3. The only criteria is they can't be a previous AA (2020 season ones don't count).
  4. To make this simple because of the extra year, we will go off of intermat rankings. If it says Sr on there, they are eligible to pick.
  5. 1st place - 1 point, 2nd place - 2 points, etc.
  6. R12 - 12 points, R16 - 16 points, anything else - 25 points

NU Coach Suspended, Player Removed From Team

Not sure if people have seen this, but trouble at hand (literally) within NU women's BB....

Breaking down the bubble...

Since I don't work tomorrow and can't sleep...

The bubble teams, for the most part, are below...with resume highlights and/or lowlights included. There is no rhyme or reason to the way they're listed, by the way...

  • Iowa State (NET 35; Q1 = 8)
  • Oklahoma (NET 45; Q1 = 3; Q3 losses = 1)
  • Rutgers (NET 80; Q1 = 6; Q3 losses = 2; Q4 losses = 1)
  • San Francisco (NET 29; Q1 = 3; Q3 losses = 1; Q4 losses = 1)
  • North Carolina (NET 42; Q1 = 1; Q4 losses = 1)
  • Memphis (NET 44; Q1 = 3; Q3 losses = 2)
  • SMU (NET 46; Q1 = 2; Q3 losses = 1; Q4 losses = 1)
  • Michigan (NET 34; Q1 = 3; Q3 losses = 1)
  • Creighton (NET 62; Q1 = 3; Q3 losses = 1)
  • BYU (NET 54; Q1 = 3; Q4 losses = 1)
  • Oregon (NET 63; Q1 = 2; Q3 losses = 3)
  • San Diego State (NET 32; Q1 = 2)
  • Kansas State (NET 60; Q1 = 4)
  • Florida (NET 40; Q1 = 2; Q4 losses = 1)
  • Mississippi State (NET 47; Q1 = 2; Q3 losses = 2)
  • Virginia Tech (NET 41; Q1 = 0; Q3 losses = 2)
  • Wyoming (NET 38; Q1 = 3; Q3 losses = 2)
  • Seton Hall (NET 36; Q1 = 5)
  • Notre Dame (NET 57; Q1 = 2; Q3 losses = 1)
  • Marquette (NET 33; Q1 = 7)
  • Loyola-Chicago (NET 37; Q1 = 2; Q3 losses = 1)
  • Colorado State (NET 31; Q1 = 3; Q3 losses = 1)
  • Miami (NET 65; Q1 = 4; Q3 losses = 3)
  • Boise State (NET 30; Q1 = 4; Q4 losses = 1)
  • Wake Forest (NET 40; Q1 = 1)
  • St. Mary's (NET 21; Q1 = 3)
  • Davidson (NET 50; Q1 wins = 2)
  • North Texas (NET 39; Q1 = 1; Q3 losses = 1)
  • TCU (NET 56; Q1 = 4)
  • Indiana (NET 43; Q1 = 2)
  • Iowa (NET 19; Q1 = 1)
Not one team even touches Iowa State's resume. Not one. I think the team that Iowa State is most similar to is Marquette. We have around the same NET and they have 7 Q1 wins, 10 total losses, and no Q3 or Q4 losses at all. Yet all the 'experts' have Marquette markedly higher than Iowa State on their brackets. Lunardi has ISU a 9, Marquette a 7, for instance. That will definitely change come tomorrow since our blowout win and their loss today aren't included in his latest bracket.

If a team like North Carolina is a play in game like Lunardi has them with their resume, how in the world wouldn't we be a play in game even if we lost out? I don't want to see that happen obviously...just trying to show that we are sitting better than literally everyone on this list if you look strictly at quality wins and losses. And it's not even close. For God's sakes, I just watch Katz talk about his last four teams in etc from Saturday and he has West Virginia as the 8th team out?! The fact they are even in the conversation at this point shows how weak the bubble is but also how GOOD the Big 12 is.

AMES — In the eyes of many Iowa State fans, after blowing a 15-point second half lead to Kansas State last Saturday, the world was all but coming to an end.

Seven days later, with two conference wins to show for it (at TCU on Tuesday and 75-54 over Oklahoma on Saturday), the Cyclones are right back in the thick of things when it comes to landing an NCAA Tournament berth under first-year head coach T.J. Otzelberger

There is still work left to be done, but let’s take a look at where things standing heading into the final stretch of the season.

First things first …

We need to acknowledge what the NCAA Tournament committee did on Saturday...

80/35

I couldn't find an older 80/35 thread.

Father John Misty headlining Friday night is a huge draw for me - I've not made it to 80/35 before, this should do it for me:

On That Note: Turn The Page

Welcome to another weekly edition of music related posts we call On That Note. The OTN team is @cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz and me.

This week we're looking at songs (Titles, Lyrics, Artists) that contain the written word. Examples words are (but not limited to) Letters, Books, Magazines, Newspapers, Diaries.

To clarify - it has to use one of the forms of media, not simply an allusion to it. For instance these do not qualify:

---“I read the news today, oh boy” (A Day in the Life, Beatles).
---“Yesterday’s news is tomorrow’s fish and chip paper” (Fish ’n’ Chip Paper, Elvis Costello).

In addition, specific titles of publications don't qualify ("The Cover of the Rolling Stone," or "1984" by Spirit)

Last week's OTN was "Don't Fear the Repeater" and can be found here:

NOTICE: Site maintenance on Tuesday, Feb. 22 starting at 8 a.m.

Just wanting to give you guys a quick heads up that the forums will be down for maintenance tomorrow morning starting at 8 for 3-4 hours.

We are upgrading to the latest version of XenForo, in preparation for the launch of our new app.

Sorry to have to do this during the week during the day but I unfortunately do not have a choice.

It will be nice to get things upgraded too.

Thank you for your patience..

Future Cyclone Football Games: UNLV

Cyclones will likely be invading Sin City in 2031! UNLV is scheduled to come to Ames in 2030 and, based upon our historical scheduling approach, we should be headed there again in 2031!

Hopefully ticket prices were covered in the contract!

Bracketology Guide / Resume Comparison Data

So there have been a handful of bracket/resume/NET related threads, but I haven't seen one that really summarizes or guides people on which brackets to look at, who's best, or where to compare resumes. Hoping this thread can help.

Background, I've been doing bracketology off and on since 2014. I've missed a couple years (2016 and 2021) which is why you won't see my rankings on the Bracket Matrix currently, but I should be added to the list again after this season. I finished 21st in 2018 and 16th in 2019 in my last two years of doing it (see "B12" for the label/link in those two year's rankings).

First things first, there is no need to ever cite Lunardi or Palm and their brackets! Ever! They are not good at it! Especially Palm! He's currently ranked 100 out of 135, and Lunardi is middle-of-the-pack at best and typically does one "magical" update right before Selection Sunday where his bracket suddenly changes and resembles the consensus of the Bracket Matrix. Reading threads here and seeing people bring up these two constantly is maddening. Ignore them!

Here are the some of the best over many years and who people should be looking at:
  1. Dave Ommen at Bracketville
  2. Lukas Harkins at HeatCheckCBB
  3. Delphi Bracketology
  4. Rocco Miller at Bracketeer
  5. Jonathon Warriner at Making The Madness
  6. Shelby Mast at Bracket WAG (He's dropped in the rankings in recent years so take his with a grain of salt, but I remember him being one of the best when I started this back in mid-2010s. Also, he does daily updates if you're itching for something new.)
Those are a good five/six to check daily to see what their updates are. When all else fails, just rely on the Bracket Matrix consensus instead of Lunardi and Palm.

If interested, here's a link to where I'm posting my bracket updates which can be found at the Bracket Matrix as well. I just do it in Google Sheets now, and I update right now on Monday and Friday.

Honestly, I don't care much if you look at my bracket, but I do think a lot of people here would find value in the "Resumes" tab I have in the sheet. I keep reading people who say, "If we lose this one, we drop to Dayton" without having any idea what other school's resumes actually look like (and how ISU is much closer to a 7 than an 11/12 as long we don't lose out). Here's an easy spreadsheet to avail yourself of the data the committee is actually using as they evaluate and seed teams. It's set up so you can sort/filter each teams' resumes/metrics however you would like. Right now, I do a mass update of the data on Monday and Friday as well, but will update more frequently as we get into the week of major conference tournaments.

Hope the bracket recommendations and resume data are of good use! And seriously, no more Lunardi and Palm here please.
