Of our last 8 head coaches, only 2 won more games in their first year than the previous coach had won in his last. They were Dan McCarney at +3 and Johnny Majors at +1. If PR wins 4 games it will be a better debut than 7 of our last 8 coaches.

You think we can win at KU? I wish everyone was as optimistic as you.

Looking at KU i think that they will be the better team but i think that we have a chance down there. ik that sounds strange and all but i jst have a gut feeling

I'm only going to be happy if PR wins more games this year then chiz did in his whole career at ISU.

How I see it:

3 = Unsuccessful
4 = Expected
5 = Successful
6 = Possible (kool aid)

EDIT: Drank a little kool aid

How many did Dan win in his first 2 seasons?
How many did Chiz win in his first 2 seasons?

How the **** is 5 "successful"?!?! I'd think 5 would be "Amazing!"

At this point, wins don't really matter. I'd like to see good fundamental technique, enthusiasm, and a sense of team/togetherness. If we can achieve these goals the wins will folow.....

I just want 1 road game win.
Then I will consider it successful.
When was the last time we could do that.
I'm pretty sure we'll beat Kent st. If we beat them, I wouldn't consider it an amazing accomplishment.

I'm not an overly optimistic guy, but 2 or 3 wins with our schedule and offense would leave me VERY worried about Rhoads. In many years I wouldn't expect more than this out of a 1st year coach, but our schedule is weak, and we were really close to having at least 3 more wins last year than we did.

Lets try to keep 1 very important thing in mind here.... We need to be competitive in every game. That is one thing Iowa State has always struggled to do. In Chizdicks first year we got absolutely hammered by Texas and Kansas. We need to play more games like we did the OU game when we hung tough and were able to compete with OU late into the 4th quarter.

When Iowa State has suffered one of those crushing defeats in the past it was the end of the year as it always seemed that they lost all confidence going forward and then lost games later in the season we should have won.

We are going to win some games but I think the games we lose and how we lose them will be an easier way to judge how far this team has come.

The UNLV loss vs the Mizzou loss tell 2 completely different stories. UNLV was an outright disaster as if we had showed up to play a full game rather then just half of a game then we would have won that game hands down. The Mizzou game showed the talent differential between a very good team and where we were last season.

The Kansas game showed a conflicting story as we were more then able to hang with a solid Kansas team but it just went to show you that if we let up even for a 5 minute span that the teams we play against in the Big XII are more then capable of making us pay big time.

Overall I think our upgrades in the coaching department will pay us huge dividends this upcoming season. Look for Iowa State to surprise some people with the defensive schemes they employ this year. I think our new DC is going to have some people scratching their heads and wondering if the guys on the field are really the same guys that we had out there last year.

I think 4 would give us some hope that CPR was on track. 3 wins would honestly disappoint me. The biggest reason I would be disappointed by that is because last year we lost 4 close games. Our schedule is easier this year, and we return a lot of guys, some who are fairly talented (especially on offense). Honestly, better coaching could have made the difference in those 4 close games, so part of me thinks we have the talent and most importantly, the schedule, to win 6 games. It's clear that CPR has made better coordinator hires than Chizik did, and he seems to be more proven in the fact that he knows how to get results out of 2 and 3 star players, so if he can't get 4 wins out of the decent offensive talent and weak schedule that we have, I'm going to be a little worried.

4 means that you beat 3 teams on your schedule that you are supposed to beat in SDSU, Army and Kent St and then slipped one other in there in probably Baylor, Iowa, Kansas St or Colorado.

To beat honest, if you don't win 4-5 games I would be surprised. Next year's schedule is not as forgiving.

I agree. Those 3 games are absolute must wins. I think the schedule is really in our favor because the games we should be very competitive in are all at home this year. I would look at road games against Texas A&M and Mizzou as road games where we have a punchers chance of knocking a team off. Mizzou lost some serious offensive firepower and God willing we won't be playing a 10 yard cushion against the Aggies which should keep their average at best qb from looking like Joe Montana out there shredding our D.

I think we win 3...I would be happy with 4. By the way I think NDSU will be a tougher game than people think.

I said 5. That would be the same as it took the Chiz to win in two seasons, and better than a lot of coaches win in their first season at a struggling program. Like others have mentioned, we must go at least 3-1 nonconference, and I think we can win at least 2 conference games. Colorado and K-State?

5 would be a successful season, but I would still be disappointed at missing out on a chance at a bowl game with 6 wins! (Last year in school, I opted out in 2005! D'oh!)
