So everyone should hire a head coach that has no previous experience? This hire is a huge risk. If it fails, you can say bye to Pollard.

Oh, no the three winning seasons...2nd round of the NCAA Tournament and NIT semifinals is all in your mind. Remember?

Pollard is definitely putting his job on the line with this one. If it fails, he looks horrible for making a knee-jerk no-experience hire and has to fire The Mayor. You don't want to be the AD to fire the all-time best Cyclone - because you'll be soon behind.

If it works, Pollard is a genius and will own keys to the city.

Far, far, far more risk here. I don't get it.

LOL

Yeah, they both had HC experience!

The trend is young coaches that relate to players. FH's NBA experience/contacts will attract new talent.

I like this hire

This is J.P.'s career at Iowa State... Fred wins he wins

but what do you tell the fan base when their favorite son (who has NEVER coached a college game) fails?

I hope he doesn't have to answer that, but he sure as hell better considered it!

more risk than what? I dont get it. If JPs new bball coach is awful, you don't think he would have been shown the door regardless of who the guy is?

If Fred doesn't work out as Coach, (and I really think he will) instead of getting fired, he will get promoted to AD, because that job will be open right before the MBB basketball coaching position is open. :jimlad:

Go Freddy, The Mayor comes home to take control of the BIG 12 and the NCAA.

I think that you are right about the position won't be open any more. This is the one person that Jamie can't fire...even if he wanted to.

Amen, OP. This reminds me of a famous poem:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

That is a horrible "argument." It's still D1 coaching experience. Hoiberg barely coached in the NBA even..I'm not actually 100% certain if he was ever anything more than an VP/operations guy.

College sports are more about recruiting then coaching and I doubt there is anyone who could sell the program better then The Mayor.
It's about both recruiting and coaching. Anyone who thinks you can recruit a bunch of 5 star guys and automatically win obviously don't pay enough attention to basketball. Need we remind you Kentucky's lineup is full of NBA players and lottery picks and still couldn't even get to the Final 4?

I agree with everything you said, except that I get it. He's putting all of his eggs in this basket and he knows if it doesn't work he's gone. No risk no reward.
