I know Diante Garrett is a love/hate fest sort of guy. I will say that I'm not in the hate fest area but close. I see serious deficiencies in his play (i.e. things I do not like). I am going to speculate here and others can join in if you want. With Anderson - SR, 3 Year Starter and DeMarcus Phillips - JR, Stud - both coming in next year, I see the potential where DG could see dramatically reduced PT. You could even see DG sit while Bubu, a walk on, sees serious minutes. You heard it here first.

Frankly what I would like to see is Freddy have the balls that MacD did not have and if DG dribbles the ball off his foot or tries a friggen finger roll that misses or gets swatted away .... "with the game on the line", that DG has somebody get in his face and sit his ***** on the bench until he learns how to finish out a game. And Anderson (or Phillips or Bubu) will play PG at the end of the games until DG "gets it". Yeah, I know lots of people around here think highly of DG but this is my opinion ... flame away if you must, but I think DG's PT just got in serious jeopardy.

All Hoiberg talked about at his press conference is DG. He knows Diante is his star player. Also, I don't think Diante's talents were used particularly well so far.

DG has shown a lot of improvement, but he still has a lot of room to improve. He had several games last year where he missed as many shots at the rim as he made, and he also was a major liability shooting from the outside. Fortunately, these are both things that can be corrected to some extent.

DG will probably play about 30 minutes a game...and I'm glad this will be the last year that has to happen!
Is DG is who FH talked about in his press conference?...yes, but have you seen the rest of next year's roster!?!
There is no way in the world that DG will even sniff the NBA draft next year!
I'm not sure why everyone thinks DG will thrive in a uptempo system...he is one of the worst pgs ever leading a fast break!
He has been loyal to ISU and I'm sure he's a great guy, but the truth is he has been a below average Big 12 point guard for the last 3 years and "lead" his team to nowhere but the bottom third of the Big 12....I hope like heck he really improves and has a great year, but I'm not holding my breath.

The guy will be on the court. It will interesting to see what he does in a new system. This team lacks quality experence depth, there is no way you can keep you most experenced player out of games.

DG is a very good Big 12 PG and there isn't much of an argument about that in my opinion. Maybe Anderson and Phillips will take a few minutes next year, but that is only because (hopefully) they will also be good players to give DG a rest (unlike the last 2 years).

IMO, the only potential gripe about DG at this point is the missed layups. I don't even care about the lack of a consistent jump shot, as a lot of PGs don't have this (and those that do are the stars in the NBA). I think people DG's frosh and soph years got stuck in people's heads and they forgot that people can improve. DG was NOT the problem with last year's team.

Is he all-american? No. But he is a quality Big 12 PG and we should be very happy to have him. I'm very anxious to see how the new staff utilizes him.

Doubt it. If DG develops his shot and makes defenders respect that he will be able to get to the rim a lot easier.

In my opinion. this new staff is going to displace Garrett asap. The McDermott kool-aid drinkers were brainwashed to believe this was always going to get better. It did not happen. Garrett was pushed around by Big 12 players and had a weak outside shot. Get over it. He is not D1 material.

Sorry, but DG will go down as the least-memorable four-year starter is ISU history. I appreciate that he is the first person to stick around for four years in quite a while, but will not be sad when his playing days at ISU are done.

You are correct Sir

Put my take somewhere between the extremes posted in this thread.
There are people on the pipe on both ends.

Your post is a bunch of BS. Do you realize DG was only 17 when he started in the Big 12 his freshmen year? He was supposed to redshirt, but Taylor got booted so Diante got fed to the wolves a quicker than he should have. So really, the original plan was for him to be a junior this year. So, how is it that guard that is "not D1 material" can go into KSU and basically single handedly take down KSU down the stretch with our star player and other key players on the bench in foul trouble or fouled out? They couldn't stop him. DG has had some great games at ISU, he has been inconsistent, but he certainly is good enough to be a D1 guard. The Big 12 was one of the top leagues this year and Diante was 5th statistically. So according to your thinking the 7 pt guards that were statistically behind him must not be D1 material? Yeah, stats. don't tell the full picture, but hopefully you get my point. Oh, and FH disagrees with you too, so your comment about the staff wanting to displace him asap is simply not true as well. Did you listen to FH's press conference? FH basically said DG is pretty darn good and hinted that he needs to use DG in the right way. To top it off, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, my dad sat by FH on a plane to Chicago this week. FH talked about DG non-stop. He will be a big part of what FH tries to do next year.

This is what I am hoping for. The DG defenders say "IF" Freddy can teach him to shoot--- teach him to finish-- help him make better decisions--- lead the team-- etc. etc. The truth is it hasn't happened in 3 years because DG is soft. Afraid?? McDermott aluded to that in the first year. DG doesn't have the toughness to ever be a great PG, but he does have the athletic ability.

Garrett shot 35% from the 3, averaged 5.1 assists and 2.6 TO's per game.

Anderson shot 21% from the 3, averaged 3.5 assists and 3.1 TO's per game.

Unless Anderson is a far better defensive player, I don't see him taking much playing time from Garrett.

DG is the best player and most capable scorer we have coming back. Maybe one of the new guys turns out to be our top scorer. Considering none of them have played Big 12 caliber competition, except the new guy from N Illinois, I'm thinking it's a little ridiculous to think DG won't be our starting point and possibly leading scorer next year.

Ok. I could kind of see your points until you said Bubu would be playing over DG. Then it confirmed you don't know what you are talking about.

I think some people forget how DG was in a system the last 3 years. His assists are very impressive for someone who was in a system compared to that of someone who wasn't. Its easier to get assists when your not in a system because you aren't looking for one guy. The rebounding edge Anderson has a Garrett can easily be blamed on the system. How do we know Anderson's team didn't just crash the boards? I know Iowa State didn't. Garrett will be in a situation where he is not going to be forced to make a decision that is basically prematurely made for him, but instead is going to get to make his own decisions on the court.

Read my logo. DG will get 'er done. Now if we can just get that 100 plays down to "seven napkin plays from the plane", we will be fine. We will play like with pro sets and look like we know where we should be on the court. If McD was doing most of the coaching, he sure had a hard time making last year's players where to go on the floor except to the bench.

For the love of god people, Bubu will NEVER see significant minutes. I don't understand the love fest for him.

yeah, a walkon freshmen will play at the end of the game rather than DG, our senior leader and probably best player..just stop the DG hate and realize he is not as bad as you think
