not really worked up about it, just think it's fairly obvious that if he's committed someone elses offer became conditional. Sledge is too good of a player to accept a wait and see if something opens up.
If you're 19 year of age, and have a choice between West Virginia, UTEP, and other schools which currently has an open scholarship to give, and Iowa State, which might have one open at the end of the year. Do you choose Iowa State?
You really think they are telling him, to hold off, until they can be sure there is a schollly?
They are recruiting him as though there is a scholly available. If he commits you have the following options:
1) the lowest guy on the scholly totum pole may be asked to find another school where his talents could be better used.
2) You have a 5 star guy who if he is not granted a chance to play this year, may choose to grow pro, and never don a Cyclone uniform.
3) You have like 5 Freshmen coming in, 1 of which was borderline on whether he would be eligible or not.. Lets see home sickness, grades, substance abuse, assault, have all hit the ISU hoops program in recent times
ISU got killed by all the transfers over the past 2-3 years. A good business man ( and yes college basketball is a business) plans ahead, looks at historical trends and the overall landscape of his industry.
I would be more upset if they did not over recruit. Heck sign 2 over the number because we will lose 1-2 guys for some reason or another within the next 12 months.
I would expect a 1-2 star player poss. taking a wait and see approach, but a player w/the talents and open scholarship offers from other D1 schools, I'd be less likely to take that approach. I'm not made or even upset. I'm just wanting to know the facts as to the open scholarship. You cannot tell me that he accepted our scholarship on the condition one becomes available.
Paul Clark spoke with Tavon last night, and was told that he would not be committing anytime soon.
I don't remember us oversigning before. Floyd probably did though. It just feels weird.
Looks like a commit to me. Go figure the schollies now.
LOL. Swing and a miss, Paul. Must have been speaking with a different Tavon Sledge.

And it may help drive the current people on scholarship to work harder which can't hurt, even for this year. He's not, there is a scholly available, again worst case scenario option 1 occurs.
Its like a salary cap you only need to be under it by a specific date.
This is about building depth, I assume this guy is going to be a much better player than #'s 11, 12 & 13 on our roster,
If he accepts the offer, then guys 12 and 13 better be checking out other schools or hope that either options 2 or 3 take place.
Thanks for the response on my first question. Now here's my second. On rare occaision there are two sport athletes, even in Division 1. Which sport does the scholly count against?
Not sure of the pecking order but if they westle or play BB and Football it goes against the sport other than football. Guessing track is the same way with FB.

Again, not true. As I recall, the scholly counts against the sport whose season competes first. Rather, that the athlete competes (rather than redshirts) in.That is backwards. Scholarships go against the sport with the most scholarships first.
