8 Players to play for 40 minutes? Holy smokes. That's 25 minutes per player!

yes, how are we going to run this year with only 7-8 guys? We tried to run a little big last year in the beginning but then injuries and stuff creeped in and when we got down to 7-8 which included a sick SC we had to slow it down or we would have been run out of the gym.

Maybe I can play. I still have eligibility left.

Seriously... Do they need to pick up couple walkons?

This is going to be a long and tough year for the team. It doesn't matter if the freshmen are ready to play or not, they are going to have to play. However, in the long run this will be good for them in their development.

It is not unusual for a team to run with 7-8 players in college basketball. Look at UNC. Look at Kentucky. Memphis. K-State. Okie State. Not a huge rotation, and these teams run like hell.

Also, I believe there are only 7-8 players in the rotation tonight. More players will indeed play in the real games until a rotation is set.

Those teams play more players during the non-conference schedule which saves legs for the meat of the schedule. We don't have that luxury. It's a long year.

Referee: Coach, you only have 4 players on the floor.

Freddie: My team is on the floor!

Gotta love the Hoosiers theme to this year's team.

I'm guessing the 2 walk-ons will combine for about 30 minutes
tonight. Every minute they can play and not hurt the team is
huge as the season wears on.

Is Royce White eligible to play in tonight's exhibition game? Antwon Oliver, for example, played in last year's exhibition game even though he redshirted. We also need tonight's game to get the guys who are eligible to play this year ready. However, will Royce White and/or the other transfers see the court tonight? Are they allowed to play in tonight's exhibition?

Just curious -- I would appreciate an answer from anyone who may know.

Thanks & Go Cyclones!

If you are a freshman, you can play in exhibitions without ruining your redshirt status. If you are not a freshman, once you play you can no longer redshirt. Transfers can't play.

Does the NCAA have to make a decision about White before the season starts or can they just not say anything and let their silence be their answer?

White's presence wouldn't hurt, and I hate the inability of NCAA to actually make these decisions in a timely fashion. I mean, what's the delay? I'm sure there's more detail to it than we know, but is it actually that complicated?

I'm not losing any sleep over it, either way. Fans got hung up on Staiger's eligibility, waited a year for the patience to pay off, waited another year for him to "become effective," he had one awesome game, then bolted.

I'm not saying any of that will happen in this case. I just don't want to obsess over it.

Royce White is NOT eligible to play in any games this year unless granted a waiver by the NCAA. How is this not known by everyone by now?

The NCAA is a big, bloated, corrupt, bureaucracy. (Kinda like our government)
They dont do anything quickly or efficiently. Not unless there is some sort of monetary incentive for them. And even then, I wouldnt hold my breath.......

Being a freshman doesn't have anything to do with it, and for that matter neither does redshirting. You have 2 types of players, eligible and ineligible. Any eligible player can play at any time. An ineligible player is not allowed to ever play. By default if you transfer you are ineligible for one year (only Football and Basketball - other sports don't do this if you are released from your scholoarship). The NCAA can give you a waiver and make you eligible immediately.

At the end of the year, if you did not play in any game (other than exhibitions) you can use it as a redshirt year and it does not count against your 4 years of eligibility (it does start the 5 years to play 4 clock). The key is that redshirt status is not declared at the beginning of the year, it is essentially retroactive at the end of the season. It doesn't matter if you are a freshman or not. DG could play tonight, take the rest of the year off and come back again next year.

Why would you write this whole thing up if you don't know the rule? Freshmen are the only players who can play in exhibitions and still be eligible for a non-medical redshirt.
