Also, If you hate our "stupid chants" watch the game on tv, we're not stopping because you can't have fun. Nothing's more rewarding than getting a confused look directly from the shooting player after we chant something, then watching them miss their shot.
I'll be honest, as a former band member... (03-07), while some are good... some of the chants are pretty dumb... painfully at times

From one of your pep band drummers:

I’m not a frequent visitor of this site, but one of my friends told me about this thread. I’ll be honest, I’m a little bit surprised at the large amount of criticism directed towards one person, but I can appreciate the humor and sarcasm as I am usually one to make similar jokes.

Just some information regarding pep band drummers:
There are 4 total drummers (2 returning and 2 new)
There is a rotation of different drummers at every game
Pep band book contains 150+ songs

I’m not one to make excuses, but throughout this past weekend, both of our returning drummers had previous conflicts and could not attend either game. Our new drummers have been in a tight spot. There has been very few practices, and they have most likely been pretty nervous. The new guys have been at 2 or 3 games total and are not totally accustomed to some of the Hilton traditions. They are both talented players , so can’t we give a few brothers some slack?

If any of you noticed or were at the women’s game tonight, I would say everything went fine as normal. We are a friendly group: if anyone has any more helpful comments or anything feel free to come talk to us at a game. Now let’s work on getting more people to games to bring back Hilton Magic!

Go Cyclones!

Don't sweat it man. The opinions of a few people on a message board don't amount to much. If anything, they're more critical of the OP than the band.

I played trombone for 4 years in marching band, with my last game in the Snow Bowl, and for 2 years in pep band, with my last game in Mass. at the NCAA tourney game where Fred Hoiberg and the guys lost to Kentucky in a great game. Played "Here's Johnny" more than a few times, and still have most of ISU Fights memorized. There were games I played good, and others I played terrible, and others I couldn't hear myself play over the noise of the crowd (which is how it always should be at Hilton). Band at the season's start isn't going to be like they will be at season's end. Keep it rockin' and bring back the Magic to Hilton.

Go State!

I joined this forum simply to be part of this hilarity.

Ever played a trapset? It's not easy. A lot of the times, they're improvising because there's no written part. Cut them some slack if they blank once or twice.

Also, If you hate our "stupid chants" watch the game on tv, we're not stopping because you can't have fun. Nothing's more rewarding than getting a confused look directly from the shooting player after we chant something, then watching them miss their shot.

No offense, but you should probably spend a little more time around the forum. I think if you looked around a little, you'd notice that lots of people have silly opinions that hardly anyone agrees with. We call them trolls. If you feed them, they become like Gremlins, multiplying and getting stronger. Sarcasm and good natured humor is the best medicine.

I was there though spring 92. I don't remember many chants, though that's been a long time and if we did them then I'm sure they were adequately geeky. Still did the 5-clap thing back then, but not many others. I can remember playing very loud to disrupt the visiting team during timeouts, and I do remember heckling Billy Tubbs...

You drummers do an excellent job most of the time, especially considering that you often have to make up the music from other written parts.

Does anyone know if Shirley Barnes still works in the music department? Maybe we can get an inside track on Harrison to come play drums for us.

I just want to know after all the failure we've had due to subpar drummers, why we havent been willing to put up a scholly and recruit for a true BCS drummer yet.

As a band alum, reading all of the recruiting posts made me feel about as close to an athlete as I think I ever will.

She does, but expecting HB to stay and play in Ames is a pipe dream at best. He's the number one drummer in the nation-on chimes, timpani, and trap set. We just don't have the pep band facilities or national exposure to really compete for that kind of talent.

Our recruiting is terrible. Only one of our current recruits had a BCS offer, and that was to South Florida. If all our recruits aren't at least 4 stars next year the director should be fired.

I'm a current member and I think half of the chants are stupid. But the alternative is dead silence, and nothing brings back that Hilton Magic like listening to fans cough.

And through all of this, how can we forget the pep band's struggles after the flood? They lost ALL of their music stands in Hilton. Luckily, relentless crews have dedicated hours upon hours to replacing these stands and just barely had them ready for the first game of the season. How was the band supposed to recruit a BCS drummer without music stands?

This actually happened exactly as described.

I'm glad to see our fanbase educating itself on our pep band. It's easily our highest-visibility team, and we need to do everything we can to make sure it's representing ISU and the Cyclones the way we want it to! A curious fact is that ISU pep band has consistently been a national powerhouse for the last 25 years, totally dominating better-known schools in more desirable locations and with WAY more resources than we can scrape together. In an interview a while back, Bill Fennelly stated that the band's success was his "one and only inspiration in making the decision to run a totally BAMF women's basketball program here at Iowa State." His original plan had been "to putter around for five to seven years, hover a little over .500, maybe get to the NIT a few times, then head out- you know, the usual," but seeing the pep band "and the way [they] just curbstomp the opposition, well... that looked pretty cool to me. I wanted to try that."

the alternative is dead silence, and nothing brings back that Hilton Magic like listening to fans cough.
I choked on my juice.

This year's team will only go as far as the Pep Band takes us. They need to bring it tonight! I expect the A-Game out of the drummer and everybody else! Go Pep Band and Go Cyclones!!!

I've heard practice has gone really well this week. The drummer apparently has really been nailing the correct tempo for 5 claps. Expect good things tonight!
