I don't know if I can ever really hate an Iowa bball coach again. Alford ruined it for me. None will ever compare to him. He was so hatable many Iowa fans hated him even before the PP handling and almost all of them hated him afterward.

I remember his "we're the major program in the state" comment. As ISU was about to have the most dominant two years the state had seen in over a decade and has not seen since. No way Fran is ever going to touch that.

I believe you can do it. Just keep an open mind. There's always room to hate another Hawkeye, at least for one day every year.

I thought a few times during the game that there was another Pelini brother I had missed, he turned several shades of red there. I don't have any problem with his antics as long as the refs won't bow down to it.

I'm obviously biased, but I didn't have a problem with Fran tonight. He did have quite a few complaints, but most of them appeared to be legit beefs. It was bad officiating both ways, but there were a couple big calls in there that went against us (the no-call charge that ended in points for you guys, and the second loose ball/timeout). That's just how it goes sometimes, but I can't hold it against Fran for arguing those calls.

Anyway, I was pretty pleased with the game. Fun to watch (though I couldn't appreciate how much fun Christopherson(sp?) was to watch as he was killing us all night), and I'm already excited for next year's game. This rivalry is poised to take off if the Hawks can get a few more players.

Fran is going to be mad a lot in his 3-4 years at iowa...

I actually think they will get mad again. And by mad, I mean madness, and by madness I mean march madness, and by march madness I mean the NCAA tournament.:twitcy:

ISU will be too busy winning more conference championships again (the real kind and tournaments) and going to sweet 16s to notice though.

He has looked inept so far, and apparently is blind.

I do not see him being at Iowa long. Failure and health issues imo.

That is not how I remember it. Alford was praised as the second coming when he got to Iowa. His first interview after taking the job was in Des Moines at recruiting event. He had a cheesy jump suit on and told the reporter that Iowa was "THE MAGOR" program in the state and he should get the best recruits. I guess there is nothing really wrong with thinking that or saying that, but it was the way he said it. He just came off like an arrogant *******. That is when I started hating that man and it only got worse with each time he opened his mouth. Iowa fans love him, they beat UConn in their first game. The Des Moines Register did 8 Alford articles and zero LE articles before that first season even started. LE was the coach that had 6 conference titles before taking the ISU job, Alford had zero yet was hailed as the coaches of all coaches by the Iowa media and hawk fans. When we played on the court, the Fizer/Tinsely team just blew them out. That is why Fizer got up on the scorers table with the sign LE #1 to indicate to everyone our coach is good or better than Alford. It wasn't until after the second PP situation until most hawk fans turned on him.

Maybe your memory is failing you a bit...LE had only 4 conference titles prior to coming to ISU...1 Big Sky and 3 Big West. He had been a primarily anonymous head coach in a couple of smaller conferences for 8 years with 1 NCAA tournament to his name when we hired him. Alford was a big story...like it or not...NCAA Champion, Olympic Champion, Bob Knight protoge', and just coming off a Sweet 16 at SW Mo. State. Listen, I hate Iowa with every breath of my being but their hiring of Alford was a big story.

By the way, I love LE for the two fantastic seasons he had at ISU but he is in his 20th season as a HC and he has only made the NCAA tournament 3 times (2 of which were the Tinsley teams at ISU). I think at this point it is safe to say that he caught lightening in a bottle for a couple of years and, ultimately, he is just a very average college coach that has coached primarily at secondary schools in secondary conferences. His record seems to indicate that those two fantastic ISU teams were abberations.

Fran's style and personality will bring back a lot of fans.

They had an announced attendance of 13k last night, and I think that actual was pretty close to that. Fans were into it, but in that way that says they're used to being beaten down by the last few years. Kind of familiar that way.

I kinda like McCaffrey. He's wound pretty tight, but was gracious in his post-game remarks, said a few nice things about our team. He sticks up for his guys. And he seems to be getting the most out very, very limited talent.

That last part is so important. He's trying to make the transition with a roster build for that plodding Lickliter style. At least Greg was gracious enough to gut the roster for us, so we could make an easier transition.

I told every Iowa fan I met how jealous I was the day they hired Fran. I was dreaming that we'd find a way to get him. But then Creighton called, Fred came home, and all was right in the Cyclone world.

As my brother puts it, when Fran's up yelling and screaming and showing emotion, Lickliter would've been sitting in his chair with his face buried in his hands pouting. Sounds like the majority of Iowa fans welcome that sort of intensity and fire.

Personally, I think Iowa hit a homerun with getting Fran. His players obviously respect him with how hard they play. And looking at their young starting lineup, they could (COULD) get back to the NCAA tourney in a year or two.

Speaking of a year or two, all of the Iowa fans we spoke with are concerned about our scout team next year.

Iowa fans are just upset that Fran was outcoached by Fred. That was supposed to be Fred's weakness.... lack of coaching experience.

Well... which coach looked like the more classy well respected experienced head coach tonight? The whiny baby Fran... or the classy Fred?

I'm not so sure having a player go off for a career high points constitutes as Fred somehow outcoaching Fran, but to each his own I suppose.
