I've never really understood the appeal of BWW either. There's one in downtown Iowa City and one in Coralville and both of them pale in comparison to the wings at either of The Vine locations. There are obviously a lot of people who like them though because both locations are always busy. I'm sure they'll do a good business in Ames.

I love people who are 'too cool' for chains. Chains dont get big because they suck.

This. Those same 'too cool' people, aka sheep, often like certain bars or restaurants just to fit in and ridicule those who like places like BWW. It's like who cares what people like, let them like it and eat or drink where they want

You've never been to an Olive Garden, I take it.

It's not about being "too cool". Some people just value supporting their local economy.
There's a reason that you don't see many chains in the city of Des Moines. There are quality local restaurants that offer a lot more interesting, and often a higher quality product than most chains.

A BWW in Ames is the same as a BWW in Tampa, FL. Some chains (Old Chicago, generally) offer a fine product, but it's not anything you can't get a million other places. When I go places I don't live, I don't want to go to national chains. I want to experience something I can only get in that area that I can't get at home. If that makes me "too cool" in your eyes, so be it. My problem with BWW isn't that they are popular. It's because they are severely over priced, and any more they've quit offering a quality product outside of their sauces. The sauce is great, but it's often over or underapplied, and the wings themselves are crap.

Lastly, don't confuse "popular" with good. Nickelback is popular. Titanic was popular. The Spice Girls were popular.

My taste buds tell me BWW is good, while my ears tell me all those suck.

The Vine is pretty awesome. I had an internship close to IA City when I was in college and would hit up the Vine every Thursday night for wings and $2 big beers. Great wings.

I wouldnt quite say olive garden sucks. Are there better italian places? Most definitely, and i prefer to go to others before OG. But OG has fairly decent food.

I think its great for the university and the city of Ames. I know when I was determining Iowa state and other schools not having a BWW was a negative. If you didnt read the link they were basically salivating over the area. Why cant we be happy that a small town gets a big addition and upgrade in the food business.

if you dont like it dont spend your money there its a free country.

this is a big 12 university all the kids that come here are not from small towns in Iowa, and dont want to go to the mom and pop shops.

its a small town with big city offerings.

Well said.

Popular chain good food all the time. Some chains become successful based on their overall business model and other services that they provide. Chucky Cheese is a perfect example.

Exactly. Sometimes people want those things that they know will have a certain level of quality. You know what you're getting when you go to any BWW.

I'm just saying that chains become chains because they're popular. Popularity doesn't necessarily equate with "good". A lot of people here don't think McDonald's is that good, but yet they're wildly successful and extremely popular.

And most of us, even those of us who don't like McDonald's will eat there because it's cheap, or it's the only thing open, etc.

I think BWW is popular because there was a time when they were really good, and there weren't a lot of them. It was like a badge of honor for a city to have one. It suggested that said city was large enough or important enough to have that kind of demand, so it was a big deal to have one. I really think that's where the fuss over a lot of chains comes from.

Any more, they're just overpriced low quality wings with some good sauce on them.

Can't agree with that. If BWW has low quality wings, then WestCyde must serve pure ****. I think BWW has a very good product and WestCyde is average at best. I will be a repeat customer over at Duff Ave many, many times.

I hear a lot of complaints about WestCyde, and I admittedly haven't eaten there in a couple years, but when I was in school it was a lot better, and cheaper than BWW. Bigger wings, and about the same quality of sauce for less $.

A more sterile atmosphere, but better food.

It HAS changed owners about 2 times since then though.

You can say this for just about every wing place.

I'm saying that in comparison to other wing places. Last few times I've been to BWW in WDM it was like getting some KFC tenders with a drizzle of sauce for $12.

The wings remind me of 3 Bag (which are the worst wings I've ever had), and the sauce was pretty good. You can get better wings at quite a few places around DSM.

Were you doing boneless or traditional?

Im not a big fan of BWW's traditional wings, but i like their boneless as well as their buffalo chicken sandwiches.

I've had both in the last 2 times I went. The boneless were horribly undersauced (hence the KFC with a little sauce drizzled on) and the traditional were just tiny wings w/very little meat, but plenty of sauce.

I'll go buy BWW sauces, and use it on stuff at home. They are really good sauces, and they know it so they skimp you on everything else and charge you through the nose. Just buy the sauces, and save a boat load of $ making that stuff at home.
