pep band drummer

Let me tell ya. It's not like it was in the old days.

I was in the ISUCF"V"MB from 84 - 87 and was the pep band drummer in 85/6 & 86/7.

In the fashion of ... we ate dirt and we loved it...
In my day we wore red, nylon pants than didn't reach down to our ankles... and we loved it! [Damn cold walking to a night game in January]
In my day we never went to a bowl game... and we loved it!
In my day students were awarded bball tickets through a lottery because more students wanted to go to the games than there were tickets... and we loved it!
In my day 200 people attended the women's bball games and they bribed the pep band with free tee-shirts, hot dogs and cokes to play at the women's games... and we loved it!

All kidding aside, playing in the marching band and pep bands at ISU turned a good collegiate experience into a great one.

My favorite b-ball game ever was vs. Kansas in Hilton in 1985. They were ranked top 5 (if I remember correctly). Got to shake Larry Brown's hand and he joked with the band a little during pregame. ISU made a run mid-way through the 2nd half; Kansas takes a time-out with the crowd in a frenzy. We start playing the fight song and the crowd is so loud I could not hear the drums I was playing. I would put the mid to late 1980's Hilton crowd up against any in the country... ever.

Actually there's always been a bass guitar (in men's anyway, NCAA doesn't allow it in women's), although this year's player is new. He's a walk-on from the trumpet section, and we expect big things from him this year.

Things were still loud a few years after that. Football was still not good (we tore down the goalposts for beating Ohio as I recall) but basketball was great. No game stands out that much for me in Hilton, though I can still feel the place rockin' during the timouts the other team would call after a big Cyclone run...

Actually, there were a number of years where we didn't have one recently (from 05-06 to 08-09 I don't think we had one).

I just heard the Pep Band Drummer got suspended by the Conductor for 3 games for violation of band rules. Very selfish on the part of the Pep Band Drummer. It will be the difference between keeping it close and a blow-out at the minimum and may cost us games at the most. The rest of the band is going to have to step up. Go Pep Band and Go Cyclones!!!

I guess that is what you have to expect from transfers who left their old school for...well, I was gonna use a euphamism, but I'm just gonna come out and say it...they murdered the alto section at their last school, but they get away with it because they are "elite ahtletes". And dont even get me started on reasons the baritones performance is down. I hear its because their hips are sore from too much hip thrusting.

While the men's basketball team's improvement this year can be partly attributed to Royce White, Fred Hoiberg, etc., I had to bump this thread in order to give credit where credit is due ---- the *******' stylings of one Mr. ISU Pep Band Drummer. If not for him, God only knows where we'd be this season.

The decision to redshirt him last year came under heavy criticism from some of you. Was he not as good as advertised out of high school? Did he not deserve his spot on the McDonald's All-American Pep Band his senior year? Was he doomed to be relegated to the triangle his entire ISU career?

However, the Pep Band Director showed great wisdom in giving his drummer an opportunity to learn from the upperclassmen and grow into a more durable drummer's frame. The results speak for themselves. And with three more years of eligibility following this year, this Pep Band Drummer has the basketball team primed for the future. The best part is, even if he decides to leave school early to take his shot in the pros, we've now seen a marked improvement in recruiting, resulting in a "next man in" attitude not only in the percussion section, but throughout the brass and woodwinds as well.

Kudos, Pep Band Drummer.

On a serious note, kudos to the pep band this year. I know they've taken some flack on here this season, but they were solid every game I went to. It really seems like the new director is doing a nice job with song selection, limiting some of the more outdated stuff. It also seems like they've been playing around with ways to get more involved with the crowd (i.e. basketball cowbell), which was fun to see. Nice job all around.
