Key fact in Big 12's strategy: Notre Dame makes $15M reportedly from NBC. Irish could keep current deal and make additional $20M in Big 12.

Wow. I didn't think they could keep their nbc deal. In essence they are getting 20M to have their away games appear on abc/espn/fox. That's huge.

I wish the schools in this league would get over themselves and add more than one team, especially if it's BYU and ND.

Yeah.. if somehow you can get those two, you grab them both, and grab one more at least decent (if not ideal) team, and call it a day. Hell, if theyre willing to come now, invite them without TAMU leaving. If tamu leaves, slip in someone quickly, even a houston or air force or something.

I really think if ND is willing to come on board that the Big XII would have to add some close regional teams.

If ND signs on Cinci, Lousiville would as well

I agree. I don't see the point of waiting for the aggie decision or result or latest whim or whatever. Just get the deal done and we don't have to do this every summer.

I question that somewhat. Their NBC deal is for first tier games. The big 12 would allow them to have a tier 3 network, but that would put them in the same situation as UT- 1 noncon game and at most one conference game if the opponent agreed and took a check.

Now, if anyone can get a 3rd tier network going other than TX, its Notre Dame, but i dont know if itd have the value of their tier 1.

Which brings in that whole discussion about the big east wanting to talk to the ACC\Big 12.

ND could save ISU, but I wouldn't bet on it, too much history not to go big 10, they will find a way to get paid and play the teams they have been playing for years in a conference...but I like the big 12 forcing the issue! Means more certainty for ISU in the long run. Consolidate now is better than waiting

The thing about ND's NBC deal is that it would still mean national television.

And if ND has so much Big 10 history, why haven't they joined yet? They are still likely to stay indy, but Big 10 doesn't seem likely.

Nearly midnight and they still haven't left and no one new has pledged, tomorrow is a new day, but likely another day where I will obsessively watch for something that isn't likely to happen, there is always Saturday and Sunday, or someday...until then may God grant some good fortune and patience to see something good for the University I love but that which has absolutely no say...

I believe ND's NBC deal is up right around the time the Big12's First tier rights are up. The Big12 could probably sign an agreement with ND that let's them keep their first tier rights on NBC until their deal expires and in return they would agree to sign on to the future big12 first tier deal as an equal partner. Of course that would still allow ND to sign a new NBC deal for their 3rd tier rights.

The Big12 might even be able to work out a deal that allows ND (and all other teams for that matter) to control their own rights to 1 first-tier out of conference games. That would allow ND keep their ND - Michigan game under their control, which might be enough by itself for them to re-ink the NBC deal at the current $15M/yr.

Do I think ND will be a conference member...no. But if it did, I imagine something like the above would be how it went down.

NBC probably won't want to pay that but I bet another network with 4 letters would like to set up a similar deal as UT has.

NBC now has its own sports networks. Getting a network with ND would be a good addition to those networks.

Can we just get this over with already? Seriously, and I don't mean this thread. But if they or aren't they? ... If the deal is going down, can we just get it over with?

I'm in that boat, too.

A recent story I read, I think quoting Beebe, touched on increasing departure fees/penalty ... all I could think was, if you're building a conference based on how much you need to punish schools that defect, the conference is doomed.

Why not create a situation in which schools actually value the alliance?

I'm close (sort of) to advocating a (non-likely) merger of Big 12 & Mountain West. (Not Big 12 leftovers joining MWC; a true merger). If UT, Missouri, A&M, OU & OSU want to be part of that (along w/ non-independent BYU), even better.

A concept like that wouldn't be my Plan A, my any means, I just don't want to go through this hand-wringing every 12 months.

If the NCAA actually had any leverage, there would be a long-term structure (that allowed flexibility of D-1 membership and postseason qualifications), and conferences could be "defined" in some kind of standardized way.

Adding ND would be great but the Big 12 needs a single network. The only thing worse for the conference then a mega school getting a huge network would be an outside school coming in and getting a mega network. As long as there are individual networks, the Big 12 will not survive.

Everyone says this, but I don't understand this comment. The individual networks are for 3rd tier rights. That means for the Longhorn network to get a game on, ESPN/ABC is using a pricey 1st tier pick to do it. It's not like that's an affordable strategy if you had a number of individual networks. Between the ABC deal and the brand new Fox deal, you basically have all football games but one already contracted out.

Now, if Texas didn't agree to pool their 1st or 2nd tier conferences games with everyone else I'd be worried.

In the end, everyone is getting so worked up about the Longhorn network, but they're really not going to have much to show on it.

If having a conference network is so important, then how come people aren't worrying about the SEC's stability? Teams in the SEC control their 3rd tier rights and contract them out like Florida. The only difference is that Florida's 3rd tier rights are going to some cable station instead of a university dedicated network.

Yes, a university network continues the inequity between teams, but there is already a vast divide between the equality of teams when it comes to team revenues already.
