How is your Edsel running these days?:jimlad:

If Big Ten wants to be premier, they need to follow the lead of the SEC and Pac 12. They need to get into gear.
That's the thing. The B10 is ALREADY premier, and new conference alignments won't change that as their current membership and structure make them premier.

And if you disagree, tell me how and why the B10, if they remained at 12 members, would be excluded from any future championship-determining structure. Wouldn't happen, ergo 16-team leagues are not necessary.

RT @PeteThamelNYT: The Big East has reached out to multiple Big 12 universities and offered a soft landing in case Big 12 folds.

I hope multiple is a high enough number to include ISU.

First, the nation's population is shifting to the south, therefore they have to expand. Even though they have some of the biggest markets, that doesn't last forever. Add the fact that this is, was, and always will be, about getting ND into the fox 12. nebbie was lucky that they offered a national name that was acceptable to osu, mich, and psu. They also thought that 16 was the end goal last year. They would have grabbed three more teams, if ND would have said yes to them.

Second, and hawkfan is actually right about this one, sort of. The markets themselves don't matter, really at all. It is nice to say that you pick up Rutgers, and you get the NJ/NYC market, but that isn't really the point.

hawk was right, Syracuse, and Rutgers don't have the pull to get into the markets that they need. Other than Orange basketball, there is no real pull there to put the fox network on basic cable.

They make the money based on basic cable subscriptions. In iowa, there are too many hawk fans that demand to see their team, that the cable companies had little choice but to put the fox 12 network on basic cable. Everyone is charged for it, even if they never watch one second of it.

nebbie put the fox 12 footprint all the way to the Rockies, and plain states. fox also has the big contract with the pac whatever and they now have regional and conference network tv deals with teams from PA to the pacific ocean.

They absolutely want UT, but the network is a problem. UT knows that at the end of the day, they will be able to pick the best of all of the options that they will be offered. fox will make concessions, but they also know that they have to be careful, because they can't upset the current big boys, whether it's osu/mich, or usc/??

lets be the first to leave the big 12. Id rather be the bad guy than the victim. C'mon Kansas and KSU its time to leave the big 12.

Couple things:

1. You may not have heard, but Nebraska left the Big 12.
2. I don't think anyone would view us as the bad guy for leaving and no one would attribute the Big 12 crumbling as a result of us leaving.
3. It's funny that you want to be the first to leave, but then ask for KSU and KU to come along.

So it looks like we have to ask whether the Big East takes 3, 4 or 5?

What does Mizzou do?

Are the Kansas schools and/or Mizzou lobbying for ISU to ensure some sort of geographic relevance?

Another question I had is what do you do when you go get up to 20, 22, or 24 basketball playing schools? How do you hold a tournament with that?

Here is an idea...see what you think about this...

You go up to 16 schools for football, and that leaves 24 for basketball.

You essentially make two 12 team basketball conferences with separate basketball tournaments, then have the winners of each tournament play for the NCAA bid.

The only other option for a 24 team tournament is holding the tournament at 2 different sites since you'll have to play so many games.

I hate this whole situation.

Scout.com: Concern in Ames

I do not have a scout.com membership. Maybe I can sign up for free? Someone should compare ISU basketball to Louisville since 1995 as far as wins and post season appearances/conf titles/conf tourney titles? Compare football since 2000 as far as records and bowl games/wins. I would venture they are not that different which is crazy considering considering ISU had McD as a coach.

Contrary to their thinking, ISU brings in all eyeballs from the state, 3 million is nothing to sneeze at. Not to mention a few major advertisers namely Principal and Pioneer. Yes, this counts for something.

The thing that has me concerned is that there are now reports out there that the trio that would go to the Big East would be Mizzou, KU, KSU. There has been no mention of ISU in any of the reports. TCU may end up screwing us if Mizzou doesn't go to the SEC.

We need Mizzou to go to the SEC.

From a TV stand point, the Big East should take us before K State. Why not open up another market. I hope Jamie is lobbying for us like Osborne did to the Big 10.

Iowa State does deliver Des Moines and it does deliver the state.

I don't care enough about basketball to go digging through all the records, nor do I know a good source for basketball stats (unlike CFB Data Warehouse):

ISU football vs Louisville football since 2000 (including 2000, not including 2011):
ISU
Total record: 60-75 (includes bowls)
Average record: 5-7 (5.4545 repeating and 6.8181 repeating) (includes bowls)
Best record: 9-3 (2000)
Worst record: 2-10 (2003 and 2008)
Seasons above 0.500: 6 (including one 7-7 season)
Seasons below 0.500: 5
Bowl record: 3-3
Conference titles: 0

Louisville
Total record: 90-47 (includes bowls)
Average record: 8-4 (8.1818 repeating and 4.2727 repeating) (includes bowls)
Best record: 12-1 (2006)
Worst record: 4-8 (2009)
Seasons above 0.500: 9 (including one 6-6 season)
Seasons below 0.500: 2
Bowl record: 4-4 (1 BCS win)
Conference titles: 4 (3 C-USA and 1 Big East)

As far as football is concerned, Louisville, on average, has done better than ISU. However, I suppose it should be mentioned that ISU is in the Big 12 and Louisville was in C-USA and the Big East. Since 2002, as far as I can tell, ISU has faced 15 top-10 opponents. I think Louisville has faced 1. I'm not sure Louisville has faced as many top-25 ranked opponents as ISU has faced top-10 opponents, but I could be wrong.
