If Texas commits the Big 12 becomes more stable than the Big East (also still twice the money), and when did the C-USA become AQ (CUSA=Southern Miss)?

Anyway this whole convo is stupid, since I still don't think OU goes west. We should also discuss the problems teams have faced with traveling west.

If Houston and Memphis are willing to come, why wouldn't Southern Miss? All three of them play in the "stable, auto BCS-qualifying" CUSA. Not that I really want any of those three schools to join. And you're right - Louisville and Cincinnati probably wouldn't rant to join the big 12. But a merger of the conferences isn't out of the realm of possibility, either.

Depends - is the strategy to expend west or east? You can't add BYU and Big East teams - the footprint is way too big. At that point it would make more sense for OU to go to the Pac 12.

Agree. The Big East is far from stable. They have 8-9 football schools and 16 BB schools. And are most likely to have teams poached. C-USA is in the same category as the WAC and MWC. NON-AQ conference. Far less money. With the contracts in place and a commitment from Texas to stay put, the Big 12 suddenly becomes a pretty stable conference. The Pac 16 Conference would dilute the money so much that it makes no economic sense. Add in the time zone changes and travel costs and I don't see OU and OSU going. IMO, this is more about a power play to stave off the financial aspects of the LHN and make Texas turn it into a Big 12 Network of some sort. Or at least give massive compensation to the rest of the conference in some way.

The whole thing is on hold right now. aTm is on hold in their move to the SEC. And OU and OSU as well. So the Big 12 can not really aggressively pursue teams nor can they do anything until the whole thing shakes out. OU has the ball right now. The Big 12 is showing good strength in the Non-con schedule. Has the #1 team in the nation. Several members in the Top 12 or so. Contrast that with the relative weakness of the Big Ten. Wisconsin at #7. Big Ten is a conference full of TV sets and mediocre football teams. And their BB sucks even worse.

That is not correct. All that is needed is for 5 teams to stay and rebuild back to 8. There are no rules for kicking anyone out other than that.

BCS AQ status is retained for at least 2 years I believe. That is enough time for someone to fill the vacuum created by the departure of OU and OSU. Any conference will have at least 2 teams with elite records and possibly 3 teams.

I see no other conference taking over the role of the Big 12 conference. Even a weakened Big 12 Conference with Texas is better than the alternatives of the C-USA, WAC, or MWC. So I really see the Big 12 retaining the AQ status. The Big East has AQ status right now. Name even ONE elite team in that conference. UConn won it last year and got the AQ bid to the BCS Bowl.

UConn had an 8-5 record and 5-2 in the conference last year.

I believe the only ones really complaining abt texas right now are OU and TAMU. If they can make OU feel loved, problem solved

My thoughts?

OU, Okie St., and Texas Tech are bluffing about going to the PAC12. Why? Because if they leave most, if not all, the remnants of what was the North will end up in another conference. This leaves Texas all alone with no real viable conference option other than the PAC12. This also means Texas will have to amend or get rid of their network to join the PAC12.

Texas wants OU (and the others) to stay or they will lose more than they will gain otherwise. Texas will have to make changes to their network setup to better accommodate the conference as a whole. I'm guessing this is why TX has said (per espn) that they'd be willing to make concessions financially to keep the conference together.

I like how this is playing out.

Bobby Burton basically is reporting OU/Texas been running distraction with Pac/ACC talk. Officials with Louisville, Cinci & Pitt have been meeting with the Big XII

I know that these schools have been in the rumors for a long time but I just don't see them getting invited to the Pac. OU/UT, sure but these two are really far below Cal, Stanford and UDub academically. I know the B1G sold out with NU but I just can't see Stanford and Berkeley allowing TTU into their conference. I know it's all about money but I see no way they could spin TTU as a good thing.
