I know fans wouldn't want to see ISU get a lower seed than Texas & KSU if we finished higher in conference standings — but that does happen sometimes. I think that'll take care of itself, one way or the other.

As far as securing a tournament bid, it doesn't hurt ISU that those teams have good numbers, especially since we'll do no worse than 2-2 head-to-head. We should want KSU to stay high; that's another potential high-quality road win.

We'll also likely play one of these teams as the 3, 4, or 5 seed in the Big 12 Tournament. I agree it's somewhat stupid at this point to be behind both as well as we've played lately, but oh well.

Texas has a 4 extremely winnable games left on their slate while we have 2 at this point. I think they're already getting some future credit for "winning" them.

Just because you beat a team head to head does not automatically put them behind you when it comes to rankings, especially if they have also beat you (Texas). This is especially true when looking at Sagarin, Pomeroy & BPI as they use many other factors too determine there rankings. Also keep in mind though that the selection committee does not use these values either, they use only the RPI formula and other numbers that the NCAA produces. Plenty of formulas and rankings out there, but you have to keep in mind what they include to get the results they do.

If you take a look at the current RPI:

39) Iowa State (2-4 vs Top 50)
49) Texas (4-5 vs Top 50)
53) Kansas State (2-6 vs Top 50)

This week Kansas State is #20 in these rankings and Texas is #38. To me, the most important thing is that everyone is projecting ISU in the tournament.

I'll be perfectly fine with Tejas and K State filling in ahead of ISU if it means they take up the 8 and 9 seed lines and ISU gets a 10 or 11.

Not terribly excited about an 8 or 9, but I will frankly take whatever we can get after wandering in the desert for the last 40 days...

Iowa State still controls their destiny in all of this. If they take care of business against the teams below ISU in the standings and collect a couple of upset wins against those ahead, this concern will be moot.

Well certainly, but for the NCAA tournament they literally mean absolutely nothing. The committee has proven many times that conference standings are not taken into account.

When the conference schedules are unbalanced as the B12 was until this year, that position made some sense. However, when each team plays every other team twice (home and away), how can conference records NOT be a significant factor?

If you've got a better record than someone else in your conference, you should be seeded better than them unless there are one or more mitigating factors such as an injury to a star player, poor record down the stretch (i.e. losing 4 out of last 5), etc.

I agree. And it leads to some real head-scratchers sometimes.

The Daily RPI has us at 39, Texas at 45 and KSU not in the top 50. FWIW.

And not a word on the ESPN headlines about a #3 matchup in the Big 12.

They must be straining themselves to not talk about the #6 team in the country trying to keep hold of #3 in the conference, against a team of nobodies (well, besides Rolls Royce White).

It's almost comical.

Have you ever seen a top 10 team this late in the year that looks more vulnerable then Baylor does? Don't be shocked if ISU goes down to Waco tonight and beats them. Baylor is REALLY struggling right now.

what's comical is the fan obsession over espn not talking about iowa state every single second. they've written about us plenty, all season long. we win, they'll write about us some more.

we're not on the bubble (we're already on the good side of the bracket), we didn't win a road game, we didn't beat a ranked team, etc. what are they supposed to say?

And then the media will swarm around, wondering "Who are these guys?"

Man, I REALLY want the Drake, UNI, and Michigan games back now.

and for those that "worry" or "complain" about the Bilas rankings, just realize that he is laughing at you. this was his intro last week.

Week 8 of the Bilas Index reflects some significant movement of teams that were, by talent and "measurables," highly regarded. However, there are but two indisputable and objective standards in sport: winning and the massive and powerful brain that powers the Bilas Index.

For those just on the bandwagon, any cloistered monks and nuns just leaving the convent, or any persons having been stranded on a desert island with no contact with the outside world, the Bilas Index is, without argument, the single most precise, dependable, trustworthy and unfailing measure of the value, worth and achievement of college basketball teams ever devised, contemplated or considered by man or beast.

Using data from KenPom.com, the Sagarin Ratings, ESPN's sequestered band of mathematicians, physicists and statisticians, the Bilas Index uses one tool that no other system can boast: the astounding, confounding and overwhelming intellect of The Bilastrator himself. I must admit it is true that the staggering accuracy of the Bilas Index and its infallibility have caused television network executives to meet in a secret location to determine what to do about the Bilas Index.

There is significant concern that, since the Bilas Index is so accurate and unfailing, the general public may consider the NCAA tournament not worth watching or following because they already know which teams are best in perfect detail, and which teams will advance. Not to mention that, if participants use the Bilas Index, bracket challenge contests will all be one big tie, because no reasonable person could possibly eschew the prescient data of the Bilas Index when making their picks.

I don't want them to talk about Iowa State all the time. I would just think that a Top 10 team (they have a category for that), in 3rd place in a major conference (not mid major, maybe that's the issue), and on Big Monday, would warrant a story on the front page.

It's not all about us. They are ignoring Baylor, too.
