But what happens when I (22) buy a beer and give it to a friend (underage) and they're caught with it. How does Iowa State prove it didn't serve my brother?

The same way NFL stadiums and college who already sell beer deal with it?

Its not like this isn't a widespread practice in the sporting world.

I would say that if there are 50,000 people in JTS, close to 15,000 are consuming alcohol.

Most of those are probably flasks, but I think that's a pretty accurate number for how many people drink at the game right now, when you include students, people in suites who are doing it "legally" and people outside the student section with either flasks or beers.
There is no way 1 out of the 4 people in JTS is consuming alcohol inside the stadium. Outside? Oh yeah, no doubt at all...probably closer to 3 out of 4.

When the issue of selling beer involves an institution of higher education, I do think the institution needs to be sensitive to the message it may be sending as a result of selling or providing alcohol at university events. Indeed alcohol is currently being sold (club and suites) but it is not overly publicized as compared to the alcohol being sold at the concession stands.

Binge drinking is a major problem on our campuses. Consequently, I think colleges and universities need to be especially prudent when it comes to these types of issues that involve the institution providing or selling alcohol for profit.

In this mememe society some will argue this to death.

The 10 Iowa State shot glasses I have suggest otherwise. It isn't directly the alcohol, but do you really think they think shot glasses are being used for some orange juice?

Student section = ~7,000? 5500 of those people are probably drinking.

How many do the suites hold? I would bet about 66% (2/3rds) of the people in the suites are drinking.

Of the 33,000 or so not in the suites or student section, I would bet about another 5-6,000 are drinking.

That end product wouldn't be that much shy of 15,000. And if you gave people the legit option of doing so, the existing number would increase.

I don't think that many people are bringing their own personal stash in, but I see a lot of passed flasks. ESPECIALLY in the student section.

I think that's how the University would look at this particular issue, but one doesn't need to look too far outside of Jack Trice Stadium to see University sanctioned/tolerated binge drinking. People are going to make choices for themselves regardless of the University's position, so the University might as well get some of the cut, IMO.

My position on this isn't about my desire to have a beer at Jack Trice. I already do that when I want a beer at Jack Trice. It's about the money that a university which needs all it can get could make.

I've sat in the student section for 5 years now. MAYBE 1/4 students are drinking in the stadium (and that's still on the high end IMO). There are a lot more students not drinking than there are drinking.

Where do you sit? Right down in front?

Maybe its the crowd I was with, but no matter where I sat in the student section, I saw a lot of people drinking, be it flasks dumped into sodas, or open beers, and not just my friends. It seemed VERY common from '03-08.

The rest of the stadium, much less so, but I don't think TruClone's estimate was as wild as assumed.

Did you buy them on-campus and full?? I know young kids that collect these glasses -- one of the cheapest souvenirs there is. Not discussing selling Jack Daniels in souvenir shot glasses in JTS are we?? apples / orange.

I've sat in the first few rows, under the overhang, between, the front rows of the upper deck, higher in the upper deck and have never seen anything close to 1/4. Right now I'd say it's closer to 1/20 than 1/4.

I'd be willing to bet less than 15% of the normal people in the stadium (not in suites/club seats) are consuming alcohol during the game.

I can walk into the Underground and load up on Blue Moon if I want so they're apparently ok with making money off me there. Then I can walk into the University Book Store and get some shot glasses and beer openers so they're ok with making money on the accessories. University allows for wet houses in Greekland. University still allows VEISHEA (they know exactly what happens with VEISHEA...and it isn't just a parade). Sounds very prudent.

In the student section that would be the case. But not among the general public. Most people reach an age where you don't have to be drinking continuously to have a good time.

But Iowa State is being tremendously hypocritical. The booze is already flowing in the sky boxes. They're pretty much saying that income determines whether you can handle your liquor. Because lord knows rich people don't get **** faced and drive drunk, ever.

When I was a student back in the early to mid 80's there was a sign outside the stadium that had a hole in it. It stated whatever could fit through that hole could come into the stadium (alcohol). It was large enough to have a mid-size cooler fit through. We would bring cans, bottles and bota's full of alcohol. Drinking age and legal alcohol limit was much different in those days...

Not exactly sure.
ISU sells licensing of its logo. Businesses buy it and put it on what they choose. ISU is not selling everything that has its name on.

Been in probably 20 different sections of jack over the years. Helped clean it when in college, I would put the number at 5% of all people in attendance. 30% is way off mark.

If a flask is passed, how many of them are going to buy beer out of the students? I would say maybe a fourth at best of those drawing on that flask. Unless people buy and give to friends, now ISU has a mess to deal with. Pro sports are different, usually college kids make up a smaller amount of the attendees than college games.

Iowa State is selling it when I can buy it in the University Book Store. They had to purchase it from someone in order to sell it.

The student section is the one with all the younger people in it on the north east side of the stadium.

Not the one on the north west side.

You are grasping at straws -- what does this have to do wiith why the University does not and will not allow open beer sales in JTS?
