I've skimmed but is this implied somewhere?

What I mean is... will next year's team without Royce be as good as this past year, like making the NCAAs. With Royce back next year the team would be much better than without him, that's a no-brainer.

I know, but that is my point. UK, KU, etc. did not build their programs right away with one and one players either. Of course, back when those programs were first successful, there was no such thing. The poster I was responding to was acting like programs like those were built because of the one and done players, and that is not true. They were built, and now, they are capable of taking in one and done players every year, and then recovering from the turnover because they get more one and done players. The one and done players were not built their program. Being able to handle the yearly turnover now is a result of the program's success.

My point is, those programs were built in a traditional way of recruiting high school athletes, and developing them into good players, and building a winning program through coaching, fan support, etc. One and done players could have been devastating for them early on.

ISU is in those early stages now. FH has tried to jump start the process a bit with the transfers. But at this point in time, having a one and done player who goes to the pros can be as much of a detriment as it can be a positive.

There is no way that the ISU program will make the progress forward next year that it could have made had Royce stayed. I don't see how that can be argued.

This post is just filled with straw men.

One, no one claimed that building a roster of ALL one and dones is a good recruiting strategy. Two, no one claimed that we will be better next year without Royce. Three, you can't compare how KU and UK built their programs in the past to how ISU should build their program now because, AS YOU SAID, those type of conditions do not exist any more.

Your point that having a one-and-done player go to the pros being as much of a detriment as a positive is just completely off. Having a player who is good enough to go the pros after one year of college ball is never a bad thing. Sorry, but it's not. College basketball is all about what have you done lately, not what are you building for 3 years down the road. Your mindset is stuck in the 90's and Freddy is looking at making the best team in the '10's.

I'm not sure if these pessimistic people are sarcastic or not. Our best scorer had to sit out because he is a transfer this year. Our best (only) point guard had to sit out because he is a transfer. Our best defender is coming back. One of the most underrated Big 12 players in Melvin Ejim is coming back. Mix all that with Niang, Booker, Gibson, McGee, Bubu and Railey :)jimlad: ) and we are just fine!

Like you, I actually think we will be better next year.

Looks like its back to the dark ages for us

Clearly you haven't been paying much attention to recruiting. This program is on the upswing. We may not finish 3rd in the B12 next year but we'll be top half again with higher finishes on the horizon.

I got the feeling at the UK game that it was his last. He played incredible and at one point during the 1st half I believe he was about to shoot free throws and stopped and paused before the got to the free throw line to look at the crowd and just stood there and stared for what seemed like 4 or 5 seconds, maybe it wasn't that long. But to me, it was like he was taking it all in one last time. I think a year would help him, especially with his jump shot, but he's got a family to take care of. Wish him the best of luck!

I see. I think we can be but it's no guarantee.

Also, I think it's a big mistake on his part. Yeah the money is there, but stay one more year and you're a Top 10 pick. Late first round at this point for this years draft.

Have you ever been in the position to turn down a million+ dollars? I'm guessing not.
The money is ALWAYS going to be there. If he stayed one more year.......It'd still be there. Stayed even two more years......It'd still be there. I'm just being a selfish Cyclone fan.

Happy for Royce. Did not see this after the season, but he was super impressive in the two NCAA tourney games. Fred will have to rework the offense for next year, but he has lots of time and talent. It is kind of scary to think about how completely pathetic the ISU offense was at times without Royce in the game.
