If this gets out to the GMS around the league, Royce will drop to 2nd round, and here's why. There is one quote (from the CF exclusive) that moved him from a potential lottery pick in my mind to a lock for the 2nd round.
"As far as basketball goes, I am not looking forward to it because I am insecure about you know, where I am but that is just the reality of it. But I have courage and whatever happens in that realm is not what’s most important."
Royce, you should have never said that stuff. This is like a job interview.
Employer: So, tell why you think you would be successful within our company?
Royce: Well my track record speaks for itself but I'm not really sure how I will fit in with your company. I am really not looking forward to a transition of this magnitude, I am not sure I am ready.
Employer: Okay. How important is success to you?
Royce: Well I have the courage to succeed, but success within your company is ultimately not the most important thing in life. Although I do want to succeed, you have to understand that I have goals outside of this company.
Employer: Alright Royce. We will likely be headed other directions with this position but we thank you for your time and we really appreciate your honesty.
My point is no matter how deep you feel about things, this is a spot where you must sell yourself and check your tongue. Say things you may not always believe. Tell them what they want to hear. Who will give someone guaranteed money, when that person isn't sure if they will succeed, and that person doesn't ultimately care if they succeed. That is the worst combination for a potential job candidate.
As an aside, the documentary on following his life that he just inked with the agent should be fairly interesting also.As much as Royce loves ISU he knows that it is time to go. Fred knew it as well. Royce is 21 and just had a great stint in the NCAA's and flashed his tremendous potential after a great season. Staying one more year was not going to move Royce up a whole lot in the eyes of the NBA. Time to strike while the iron is hot. Royce will be drafted in the NBA first round and get guaranteed money. Fred knows this from his contacts in the NBA.
IMO, it is refreshing to see people like Royce and Fred have such a great relationship that they can be honest and open about the future and what should be done in consideration of the best interests of the player. Royce will be a great ambassador in the NBA for ISU. And the resulting positive publicity will be a benefit to ISU and our program.
The Royce White Story and the resurrection of a career and future basketball career is quite remarkable. Our basketball program is in great hands with the Mayor.

You may be naive not to think that all college players are hesitant to take the stage to showcase their talents. What Royce said is probably typical to what players really feel. Refreshingly, Royce just happens to be more honest than the the other "I am great and super" potential players. I just feel the GMs will understand that.If this gets out to the GMS around the league, Royce will drop to 2nd round, and here's why. This was the first the guy actually played competitive college basketball, and now suddenly, he is jumping to the NBA. IMO, Royce got better and certainly more confident as the season went along. He finished with great games against some lottery picks. I think all he is saying here is that this is all happening really fast, and his confidence is not quite there yet. As a person with an anxiety disorder, I would guess, right now, he is not looking forward to the next level. I think once he trains for it, goes through the various skills testing and other testing that the NBA does, he will start to realize that he does indeed fit and his confidence will grow. If a GM cannot understand where this kid has been and how far he has come in a short time......well, that is their loss.
Anxiety is such a rare thing in the NBA. I don't expect GMS to understand it, so it is Royce's job to ensure them and make them feel comfortable with it. He has to learn to spin his answers to make the GMS and scouts feel more comfortable with it.
I agree with you and think it probably would've have been better for Royce not to say that, even though it was an honest statement. These GMs and scouts typically get to draft two players, one of who may make the team, and whether they keep their jobs can partially depend on their success in the draft.
We all want to avert risk as much as possible, and Royce is sounding, I repeat, sounding, like a high-risk player with statements like these.
It's not like his anxiety will magically get better by staying at ISU one more year. He's dealt with it since he was a kid. So he may well drop down a notch because of the anxiety issue. But the same would happen next year.

What are you basing the "rare thing" comment on? A little under 20 percent of American Adults have some form of anxiety disorder, so I am pretty sure some of them are NBA players.
You are advising Royce to "spin" his answers? Yeah....that seems like a good idea. Don't be honest with the people who may want to draft you and pay you millions. Just let them find out later when the problem comes up.
I'm sure Royce will be very straight-forward and honest in his interviews, and I am pretty confident that he will be able to alleviate most of their concerns.
Idiocy.
