I think one of the differences between Gary and White is that one got kicked off for a year. If we decided to take Gary back in a year I wouldn't be opposed to it if we for sure thought he was going to keep clean. You can't, however, just ignore it.
"Keep clean" of what? Some of you guys are acting as if the charge is is purportedly pleading guilty to is some reflection of reality. It is obvious that it isn't. Do you know why?

Becaus eif it were a robbery, one to which he was seriously being charged, there are four or five teammates who would be being charged as accomplices. Do you know what? Ages ago, the county attorney's office announced that there would be no further charges in the matter. Guess what? If one pellet gun was implicit in a "robbery", so were the other five--and the guys holding them.

IS the county attorney's office investigating, interviewing, or charging any of those guys? No just "no", but hell no! Do you know why? Because they know that with that much of a spotlight, that much supporting, interlocking testimony that it was simply a prank--they wouldn't be able to get away with such a sham! It would be a waster of taxpayers money!

Now, do you get it--or are you just going to content to continue to keep looking at the surface of the matter, simply the words, rather than the actual substance?

After all, first impressions are all that really matter, aren't they? :twitcy:

What robbery? I must have missed that. Did anyone actually see a robbery happen? Honestly, let's look at the particulars of the case.

And if your CHILD had been the victim, and had actually been robbed, i could see your outrage. But this was somebody's grown son, not a child, and it wasn't a robbery.

Stop blowing things out of proportion. Or do you work for the County Attorney's Office--or Campus Security?

You pull a gun on my child on campus and you are on scholarship to play football, you would be gone......history. The fact that he is pleading guily to a felony is proof enough. My Attorney would park a lawsuit at the door of the new president and he would take swift action. Young Mr Gary needs to go back to Florida(or where ever he is from). If he gets jail time, it will be a moot point.

what? A robbery is NOT about the tangible things taken, its about the feeling of safety and security stolen from the victim. Many people never get that back, even if they find out after the fact that it was "only" a pellet gun.

The likely reason they others were not charged was an inability to positively ID them ........ tough to take your eyes off the guy holding the gun.

All this near the steps of Curtiss.

Then why did he plead guilty? If they have no case and he's innocent than why did he plead guilty? He obviously has legal help or it would not have taken this long for it to go to trail/get plead out. Why didn't his lawyer blast huge holes in this shaky accusation?

Story County DA is one of the harder DA's in the state to please if your a cop. I remember one time a community service officer caught some people stealing bikes and followed them. When the people were stopped by police they had bolt cutters hanging on the handle bars and the registered owner saying that the people weren't given permission to use them.. The case was thrown out by the DA for lack of evidence.

Do you really think that if the case was soooo shaky, that they would have Gary pleading out to a felony? Gary lawyer would make sure he didn't get a felony if there was nothing to this.

He wont be kicked off the team. Every single time there is a legal issue a bunch of posters grab their pitchforks and call for his head, and usually they are wrong. Especially in this case since he already served his suspension.

No kidding, it seems they never learn.

I'm usually a pitchfork guy, but not this time. My money says he is playing this Fall and more than likely starting in game 1.

I want him gone, but I don't see it. Robbery, attempted robbery, what's really the difference especially when a gun (BB or real) is involved?

When was the last time a bunch of posters grabbed pitchforks and called for his head after a player was convicted of a felony?

I'm surprisingly indifferent about this case, partly because it has been so long since it happened and he has already been punished.

I do think that it is foolish to keep a guy on the team who has plead guilty to a felony. Let him sit out a year and then see. I also think it is foolish to keep someone around just because he has talent. What kind of message are you sending everyone else on the team? If Rhoads keeps him I don't want to see a less talented guy kicked off for something similar.

Some of the posters on here need to realize that there is more to life than winning and ISU athletics. Just because he is a athlete doesn't mean he is innocent. Just because a coach is popular, doesn't mean he is perfect. If we can't see flaws in our athletic program, then what right do we have to point and laugh at anyone else?

ROTFLMAO! You do realize that it's not what it LOOKS like, but the actual THREAT to a person that matters, right? A whole bunch of stuff can look like something other than what it actually was--and the only thing that MATTERS is what it actually was.

Seriously. A bunch of football players are horsing around. Being STUPID. One of them takes it took far, playing whatever game they're playing, and acts like he's patting some guy down. I.E, "looking for weapons". That's what patting down is--by definition. It's a PRANK. A joke. A stupid one nonetheless, especially given current times--but at the same time, who is going to take this seriously, in broad daylight, in the middle of campus--in Ames, freaking Iowa? This is NOT New York, Chicago, or L.A--or even 6th Avenue in Des Moines.

It should have been treated as such. As a PRANK.

Instead, Campus Security (which has sought for the last thirty years to puff themselves up with fancy names) which STILL wants to justify carrying handguns on campus, wants to make an issue of it. And the County Attorney's office wants to make points with on how "tough" they are on "crime".

So they blow it out of proportion. Why? Because they can. After all, they have to do something to justify those unificent salaries--and there's no other ballgame in town.

Technically, by the letter of the law, this can be considered a felony. So they go out and push this, back the poor kid into a corner--where he is essentially taking the heat for several of his teammates as well--and give him a choice. Either you can plead to this, or go to trial--and not only risk the whole sentence, but accrue a whole bunch of expense in legal fees that you can't afford.

So, what does the kid do? He accepts the plea--and I don't know all of the terms, or possible priors (as Berryman had)--thinking that then he can get on with his life. After all, he DID do something boneheaded. Something wrong. He deserves to be punished. And they have him in a corner.

Perhaps that's his reasoning. I don't know. It's my best guess, as someone who was close to the court system in Ames for quite some time.

Honestly? I think this might have been a mistake on his part. Again, depending on the terms. Because if he had taken it to a jury trial, I am reasonably sure that a GOOD attorney could have gotten a jury to laugh at the idea of this being a felony.

But do you know what? GOOD attorneys, with the balls for that, are expensive--and they DON'T hand around Ames, Iowa. Or Iowa period, for that matter.

So, if all of you saints out there want to get down off of your high horses, you might want to take a moment to stop and think about some of the boneheaded things you have done--and what might have happened had you gotten caught, AND someone decided to take things out of context.

Oh wait--my apologies to those of us out there who are as pure as the driven snow...yeah, we know who you are.

Well, hey, I know that I'm not. And that's why I have some idea of what this kid is going through. As well a not only a little bit of empathy--but a little understanding.

This guy gets it. I will be shocked if he does not get a suspended sentence or deferred judgement and the whole thing is eventually expunged from his record. (If a felony can be) Why else would he plead guilty. It is expensive for a college student to get any lawyer and I'm sure Gary took whatever he could to avoid jail time. That is how the system works. Although I don't think a jury would convict him of a felony over this, it might and then he would face a much more serious sentence. This incident was very stupid on his part, but the overreaction has been just as stupid. Whether or not he is an athlete I don't think he deserves to be kicked out of school over this. A suspended sentence or deferred judgement will already put him on a short leash.

A second chance is a very good thing to offer. It was what Royce was offered and turned into something special.

However, it was at a second school, he learned from the consequence, at his second school.

We are talking an attitude from this player, on CENTRAL CAMPUS- "We own this place", that rings loud and clear how he was thinking. How CPR responds will determine not only his attitude, but also the rest of the team.

Also, if it was my daughter, I would not rest until I knew he was actually off campus, humbled or asked for forgiveness. Again, attitude.

Fine to trust the coach to evaluate and make a final decision. However, he needs to know how his fan base and donors feel. This is a discussion board. I have an opinion, others have the same or different. I may not agree with the opinion but I will not try and shout it down.

Bottom line for us, I want ISU to win and do what it takes to win. Within a framework of what is right. HONOR BEFORE VICTORY, even at the cost of such.

PS: Does it matter it if was meant to be a prank or not. It failed.

Lighten up Francis......it's not our decision & our opinion will not have any bearing on the decision. Kid made a mistake & has accepted responsibility for his actions. Move on...it's over. Btw, you are not allowed to celebrate with us on any of his touchdowns this upcoming season! :jimlad:

Hope he does do well if on team.
However, fan opinions, on either side does matter, that is why there is a long thread discussing it.
In addition, fan and donor feedback can affect the situation.

Unless a player kills or rapes somebody...suit him up. You know I really wonder what the tough guy pitchfork crowd would say if the player was right in front of them? Or maybe knew them personally? If that was your boy or somebody your kid went to school with and you know to be a decent kid? But it's so easy to cast judgements from behind a computer screen.

Albert will play. He's been punished by the team. Nuff said.

I believe you are incorrect. Once this case is finalized and Gary becomes a convicted felon, university policy most likely dictates that he is dismissed from school and the team. I don`t believe that CPR has any say in the matter from here on out.

There should always be one exemption for disciplinary suspensions - Iowa. They always play their suspects, convicts, and defendants against us, why shouldn't we return the favor? The trial should be scheduled for 2 days after the Iowa game. Is there anything that CPR can do to help control our academic and criminal issues? Or is that just a consequence of getting better

JFC.
