I never told jokes as a kid either. Most the kids we got tonight didn't open with jokes, but when I asked most of them had one prepared.

We had a group of like 8 kids come to the house. The parents made each kid tell a joke before they got a piece of candy.

We were confused when we first moved to DSM 7 years ago. Now it seems natural to us. However, I get a little miffed at people who expect a joke out of my 2 year old.

What's wrong with central Iowa? Trick or Treat night is on Halloween everywhere else. I had a bunch of kids come by, but I told them to come back tomorrow.

I agree 100% but I don't turn kids away. :)

I think it is dumb to celebrate Halloween the night before and I can't stand the dumb jokes. Just trick or treat on the correct night and say "trick or treat".

There were certain houses that wanted to see a trick or have a joke before I got the treat. A somersault or or cartwheel usually worked. It was worth it. They gave out popcorn balls.

I went trick or treating in Davenport a couple of times growing up and don't remember telling any jokes. Also handed out candy last year in Davenport and didn't hear a single joke.

That's on you..you gotta send a message to the first kid. "Tell a joke or get your trespassing *** off my property." The kids talk. Word will spread.

When a little girl showed up at my door dressed as a Hawkeye cheerleader, it dawned on me that I should've had some gross candy (like black licorice or that peanut butter taffy junk) for just such an occasion. I gave her a peanut butter cup anyway.

Trick-or-treating is on Halloween in Ames. There are only a few houses our kids go to where they make you tell a joke. Otherwise it is all about the candy, you are lucky to get "trick-or-treat" out of most kids--they just hold out their bag.
its just centrtal iowa an invention of the des moines register to reduce pranks ...i asleays told jokes in nevada(IA) growing up

Never heard of the joke-telling thing until now - but I think it's really cute! Last year was the first time we were around for Halloween at our apartment and we got three big bags of all the best candy - figuring with all the kids we see around our area, we'd get a bunch. Nope. We got four kids.

We were eating the rest of that candy until Christmas! We were pretty happy that we went with all our favorites.

I used to live in Davenport and their reason for doing it on the 30th was that they wanted people to attend the parade which was always held on the 31st. Not sure if that is the case elsewhere, but it made sense.
