FYI - He was classified as 2013 in that video but will do a year of prep and be in class of 2014. I don't know where he will prep at but by the time he is done there will be stiff competition for him. We are definitely in the mix as of now.

Do want! Pershing made it to the semis/quarters this year too so they are a good team!

I have heard a rumor that we are intensely recruiting a few skilled, athletic big guys who can shoot.

That rumor also applies to 257 other DI coaching staffs.

Most recent known interest for '14 big men:

Miroslav Jaksic
Sean O'Mara
Abdul Malik-Abu
Quadri Moore

the one thing in common is that they've all been characterized as "skilled" - they can all pass, and some are known to step out and hit jumpers. With the grassroots circuit upon us, we should hear more (or not) or other names.

I was disappointed Booker didn't have more contribution this year. I'm not sure if it was due to his attitude funk, or if Fred's system can develop and utilize bigs.

If Iowa State could land a big man with just average offensive ability but above average defensive ability in the post it would be a perfect fit. ISU's post defense has been pretty weak so having a big that could protect the paint would be a huge upgrade. A big man with even average offensive skills in the post could thrive in Hoiberg's offensive system as the floor is spread on the perimeter giving the guy a cleared out lane and typically one on one situations down low.

I think Hoiberg's system is really ideal for a big man for those reasons. One would think a kid would be licking his chops at the kind of opportunities Hoiball would present for them down low. With the perimeter shooting ability of ISU's guards a post player with decent skills could be dominant and we all know how Hoiberg loves to take advantage of mismatches. See the Notre Dame game for an example... then imagine ISU with a true big man patrolling the paint. The amount of mismatches that could be created would be lethal for opponents.

A lot of Bigs don't like that fast of a pace, at least the defensive ones.

Jack Cooley comes to mind. Can't believe they picked him to play in the All-Star game. However, he is playing on Dreamy's team, so he may actually look good ;-)

I dont care the height of the big.. but they better have the ability to put the ball on the floor and/or shoot the 3. Im loving this spaced out offense.

I think Fred's philosophy is similar to what we see more and more in the NFL. Our team is built to score points and defense is less of a priority. If we can score points at a rate faster than most teams, it puts a tremendous amount of pressure on more traditional teams to try to match our style of play. I'm not sure a 7 footer would fit our style unless he has a skill set similar to Niang or White. Our 5 needs to be able to play away from the basket on the offensive end of the floor and cause the opposing 5 to play in space. Having a defensive stopper in the middle is less of a priority. It is kind of like having two 350 lb run stopping DTs on a high scoring NFL team. They don't play much once you get a lead and force the other team to play catch up.

Way up there
There are just so many more wing players than big guys, ISU isn't in a place to pick and choose recruits so Freddie goes and gets guys he knows he can win with. I think the mold has been cast for the type of bigs Fred's looking for, I'd expect to see versatile guys who can help spread the floor out. That's more than likely going to be a guy who's a bit undersized. I'm sure Fred wouldnt turn down a 7ft'er but I'd expect to see guys similar to what he's won with so far. We've been undersized the last few years but I can't think of a game we lost that you can point to us not having enough size. If anything teams like KU and Baylor, we're caught trying to adjust to our style and it negated their big guys.

A 6'10 athletic shotblocker would be awesome, but if he cant shoot or dribble drive then he takes away our mismatch of a big guarding Niang or Ejim. If he can shoot, he probably has a free car parked in his driveway with a Baylor license plate holder.

I think our needs are more someone who can play the 3/4 spot like Clyburn and Ejim did last year. Okoro looks like he has the body for that role or maybe Amardi, when Ejim is gone. Niang at the 5 is a huge mismatch for most teams.

I don't think a 7 foot big man is what Fred wants. If you look at NBA and College team many of them are recruiting athletic players, and using 4 gaurd offenses much of the time. If the players that are playing the 4 or 5 position are physical players, like Ejim, they create matchup problems for big slow players.

Maybe so, but it is also a huge mismatch for Iowa State as Niang stuggles to guard those bigger players also. Foul trouble, Foul trouble, foul trouble.

What's the general feeling about Gibson on here? Like, do you guys think he is gonna be a player and be able to step into the Center role?

Well Niang will likely continue to start at the five. If Gibson learns to play some D and pass instead of trying to shoot every chance he gets then he will play. But I like the sound or Amardi based on him being able to clean up against our bigs when they were in they gym together this year.

.

Size, or at least height was not that big of an issue in George or Ejim defending posts nor was it the main culprit in their occasional foul trouble. There are not a lot of good, back-to-the-basket big man to exploit Georges being 6'7". Georges adding 20 pounds of muscle is what we need.

Where it does show up is helping off of their man- there is no one that can rotate over and protect the rim when someone else gets beat.
