This will be an unpopular post here on CF, but adding Uthoff (and Jok although I think he'll need a year to adjust) could take them to the next level. Iowa was a shooter or two away from the NCAA this year. Too many games they shot 32% from the floor, and lost by single digits.

Iowa should be a NCAA team next year if marble comes back. However I don't think hoiberg or we shoul care about what iowa is doing, the goal is to dethrone Kansas as big 12 champ and a for final fours! Isu was close this year to making a run and hoiberg has only been a coach for 3 years.....where was bill self in his third year???

We've had 2 phenomenol years, yes, but it had a lot to do with having Will/Royce - freaks who were both guard and forward, and could cover any shortcomings. If we do get more of these types, it will make the team fun to watch and we'll continue to be successful. Call me old-school , but we will never win a NC with a 4 guard lineup. There is no off-night with a team that relies on defense/layups/dunks/rebounds. Outside shooting can be hot or cold - you need to be shooting well for 6 consecutive games to be NC with our system.

I would think in year 4 anything but an NCAA bid is unacceptable. Barring injury. You might want to do some research on Bill Self.

You probably have a point, but when you are only averaging 66 points a game in conference play (including an overtime game where you only score 62 and a double overtime game where you can only manage 70) even single digit deficits can be steep slopes to climb.

By the way, in their last game I would say they didn't lose from lack of a shooter, but rather from the lack of anyone who could make a lay up.

Uthoff will give them the strength to make more layups.:jimlad::jimlad:

Fred has gone after talented kids that were available the last couple years and has won with JUCO's who allot of your top tier programs won't touch. Fred wanted ball handlers and not just guards. Since he's won with the hodge podge of players he's recruited Fred will be able to bring in a wider range of talent including skilled big guys.

So is there anything to the Josh Davis deal or is it in the "transfer-we must be in the mix" category?

I think we were just on the list of schools that contacted him so who knows. There's even less smoke to this one than the Olu Ashaolu thing. Olu had a pretty disappointing season for Oregon after playing really well against lesser competition, anyway.

Iowa may get to the next level next year, but I don't think it will be because of Uthoff. In my opinion, it would be from improvement from their current players. They aren't adding anybody really dynamic enough to make a difference.

If you check KenPom's player comps for Clemons, Gesell, and Woodbury, their freshman numbers compare pretty well to the freshman numbers of some pretty dang good players. Tray Woodall, Ryan Boatright, and Markieff Morris. If Fran and the staff can coach them up, they can really improve. They won't touch Niang, but on the whole, there's a lot of room for improvement.

In his third year as a head coach, he was taking Oral Roberts to an 18-9 record, then 21-7 the year after that. From there he went to great success at Tulsa for 3 years, then 3 good years at Illinois, and finally Kansas. Honestly, except for his first couple of years at ORU, he has had nothing but success.

I agree - the freshman are solid and will improve. The foundation is already there. I just think having an outside threat can/ will tip the balance.

missing the NCAA for Iowa next year will be a big disappointment.

It's not that Fred isn't recruiting post players, he just has yet to land one. I think he'd rather go JUCO than get a Jordan Railey or Eric McKnight. For 2014, the posts we seem to have a realistic shot with are Moore, O'Mara, and Jaksic. Abu seems like a bit of a long shot at this point.

IMO any potential bigs will have to have the ability to run the floor and shoot. That probably narrows the field considerably. A lot of them just wear out to easy to play up-tempo.

And with those being the rarest players in basketball, they will be the most coveted and hardest to get.

Don't forget Miroslav Jaksic '14. I am high on him. Duke is keeping their eye on him. Watch some video on him, he would be perfect for our system.

I love that guy and he would thrive in Fred's system.
