Re: Rashad Vaughn
Serious question here, and I know UNLV is still in the running (no pun intended ;-)), but what do they offer that ISU cannot offer besides being in a bigger and better city and that Vaughn has been there for a year or so?
I understand part of this may be a relationship thing, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it after that. UNLV has been a good program the last handful of years (though they have been eliminated in the first round of the tournament for the last four years) for sure, but ISU has also been good the last small handful of years and it looks to be looking up as well (and ISU has won its opening round games the last two tournaments and should have knocked off tOSU last season in the round after).
There's no doubt that Vaughn would be "the man" at both schools, but this doesn't excuse the fact that ISU plays in a better, more exposed conference than UNLV and usually has more room to get more air time on national networks, more time in print in national publications, etc.. especially if the team is good. A network like ESPN or CBS is much more apt to pick up ISU vs. Kansas almost any day than UNLV vs. BYU or Colorado State. The competition and talent on average in the Big 12 is better than the Mountain West. If you're a scout, would you rather see how Vaughn is doing versus mid major teams (maybe a few NBA players), or future NBA players and even first round or lottery picks in the Big 12? You'd have a much better gauge as a scout looking at this and it's probably more attractive even if you're averaging say 18 points a game in the Big 12 versus 23 in the Mountain West.
UNLV has had some decent recruiting as well the last few years (Anthony Bennett too) especially with signing the #15 player for the class of 2014, but ISU has also had good recruiting classes as well to bring in great talent. Also the fact that Fred Hoiberg played 10 seasons in the NBA and then was in the front office of the Wolves for another 4-5 years. To say he's connected in the NBA is an understatement. Also, it's well known that Hoiberg doesn't like to come in with one set and make his players adapt to it. He adapts to his players and it's well known that he lets players play with the freedom they want to which we all know is very attractive to most players.
We also have practice facilities which are only a few years old, which are some of the best now in the country for college and according to some, just as good as some NBA teams' facilities.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm having trouble understanding what makes UNLV so special ahead of ISU outside of the fact that Las Vegas is a bigger/better city than Ames and Vaughn has been there for the last year or so.
