Re: Rashad Vaughn

I'll go ahead and absolutely disagree with you here. Not all coaches are great developers and teachers (coughcoughcoughscottdrewcoughcough), but even one and done players are far from the finished product. They may have their bodies ready for primetime, but there is a lot of mental development to be done, not to mention perfecting shooting stroke and the finer parts of a player's game. This is one of Fred's best qualities - without Coach Hoiberg we have absolutely no chance with a guy like Vaughn. I think those not in the know about Hoiball will soon find out what it's all about.

If that's true, if they don't know about Hoiball, then maybe their best course...would be to tread lightly.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I'm guessing UNLV, ISU, or KU will be his destination. Just because KU can pull **** out of nowhere.

However, I don't see UNLV only recruiting him for 4 months as an advantage for them like the UNLV fan does. I think it is a much bigger advantage that ISU has been recruiting him since the beginning and has been sending the full court press. It is good for UNLV that he has gotten to this level of interest this quickly, but getting a commitment is a whole other story.

Fred has developed a relationship with Rashad since he started recruiting him in 2010 (picking up where Micky D left off). I doubt UNLV will develop that same relationship in just 4 months.

That's the problem. UNLV seems to be recruiting Rashad's "handler" and not Rashad.

That guy (based on interviews) seems to be star struck and looking to put Rashad into the highest profile program he can. All UNLV needs to do is convince that guy that HE'LL benefit most by Rashad going to UNLV and he is set.

It's basically buying a player without any money going to the player. Give his prep coach a job on your staff.

I understand that. UNLV has to play dirty even to be on ISU, UNC, and KU level in this recruiting race. Fred just has to go all out on the official because that might be the last chance he has to really woo him. We need full support for that Michigan game. I'm talking 10x that Kansas game last year.

Agree. It's completely and utterly sad that he has this much say and pull in Rashad's decision. Yes, he's his mentor and all, but come on...this decision should and better be left up to Rashad and his parent's. I say parents because they've raised the kid, not because they like Fred. Ultimately, it's Rashad's choice. Seems like this Kaffey just wants to place RV in the limelight and try and catapult his own coaching career by being a parasite, which is asinine. At least that's what I've picked up from the media and other people.

I don't know, maybe i'm being too critical on this Kaffey??

It's been quoted in the media that UNLV has a great relationship with Vaughn's Dad and Kaffey? So you're telling me with them recruiting for 4-5 months is the same relationship as Hoiberg recruiting for 3 years?? That's a lot of catching up to do to build a great relationship. Things like that take time. I realize that this happens to a lot of programs across the country where more successful schools come in at the last second and steal someone who had a longer standing recruiting process. But Iowa State has a pretty good brand along with Hoiberg to think that Fred's relationship isn't taken lightly. I guess if UNLV can swoop in and whoo him with the big city lights and their recent successes then more power to them. Even though that recent success is a loss to a 12 seed. Yes, I think they are in the mix, but to say they are ahead of us, I'm going to have to say no. If they were a blue blood program like KU and UNC where they do this all the time, I'd be a little more worried. KU did it with Wiggins, so they will always make me nervous. Tarheepfan seems to think things don't look as good with UNC, but Vaughn was still close to committing back a few months. Was he going to reschedule his visit? I thought I read somewhere he was. Vaughn has 5 officials...so far he only has 2 set since he cancelled UNC's (reschedule). That leaves KU and it's been reported he'll use his last on UNLV??

Re: Rashad Vaughn

What UNLV was able to do for Anthony Bennett makes me more concerned about them than Kaffey.

Why? He already crossed Kentucky off and they've done way more for all their players! not just 1. If he goes to UNLV, the Anthony Bennett situation will only be a small factor.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

How many times did you honestly hear about UNLV and Bennett on sportscenter/ESPN/whatever? Probably less than any other #1 draft pick ever.

When have we ever had a #1 pick? Hey Man, I want him as much as the next guy. Just trying to help explain why UNLV is a threat. I see them as a MAJOR player in this. I also believe Iowa State is as well, but I am seeing a lot of early similaritites in Bennett and Vaughn. The only difference, which is a big one (I admit), is Fred Hoiberg.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I think there are a few factors to be considered here...

1)Fred's NBA experience as not only a player, but more as a front office person.
2)His track record thus far as a head coach not just to win, but to get the most out of his players, some of whom failed elsewhere.
3) Vaughn's desire to be a one and done.

While I have expressed I'm not a fan of the one and done, Fred knows how to prepare someone in 1 year. While Royce White is a bad example because of his personal issues, he's also a very good example based on where he was drafted. Fred took him in, got him ready and he got drafted higher than many would have expected prior to his one season under Fred. Fred advised him it was time to take the jump even though he knew it would leave a void on his team. I think that matters. Any "handler" will have some selfish motives. I think Fred has shown he cares about his players and brings out the best in them. If Vaughn wants a 1 year experience hanging out in Vegas, so be it. If he wants to prepare himself for his career there aren't many people better than Fred. We'll see how it plays out.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

i have been reading this board for a few weeks now, just getting a view from other schools fans.. its crazy how many RV avatars i see . its funny seeing the one unlv guy go back and forth with you guys lol. but one thing that bothered me was the fans talking about unlv's schedule, last year their sos was 17 iowa st 43.yea we bombed in the tourney (being the 5th seed playing the game 45 min away from the 12th seed home court, and a team we played earlier in the year, that is unheard of). but having the number one pick who also went to findley wipes that away in recruits heads (i think) i dont know no to much about your school but i know unlv has one of the best attendances in the country (14th last year , while iowa st was in the 20's. we also have one of top basketball facilities in the country. so i see how some of your fans get angry by schools like UNC writing them off, well i feel the same..goodluck guys, i feel your school needs RV more than we do but i hope we get him!!

Kenpom has ISU rated as last years #54 overall SOS and UNLV with the #74, FWIW. Not sure where you are getting your numbers. ISU also finished #28 in his overall rankings with UNLV finishing #42.

You said you were more afraid of the Bennett pick than the Kaffey situation. I'm just saying, Bennett is nothing like Vaughn.

Is talking RPI or BPI? I remember seeing UNLV high up on something last year, but it wasn't SOS.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

im glad you like to correct posts on the INTERNET.. what a clown

I've never understood the "Internet" or "messageboard" excuse for crappy communication skills. You want to be understood, and communicate effectively, right? Why does it matter (or rather - doesn't) if you're on a messageboard?

anyway, back on topic - I agree with you, that UNLV is a legitimate player for RV.
