We recently adopted two kittens for my daughter. I'm more of a dog-guy, but I opted for cats instead of dogs since we tend to be gone a lot and cats don't need to be let out to do their business. The last two days, we have come back from work to find a plant tipped over and stuff knocked off the counters.

I have no problem disciplining them when I see them up on a counter. I also understand that trying to discipline them hours after the fact is just dumb and won't accomplish anything besides releasing anger. I am looking for advice on how to stop this from getting worse.

My experience with cats: growing up, we had a mess of inbred farm cats with glazed over eyes that fed themselves my catching mice and were often killed by stray dogs, raccoons, and genetics.

My initial solution to my problem is using them to beat the dirt out of our rugs Monty Python-style.

I will take any advice serious or hilarious.

I love all of my pets, but I favor my cat from college. She has been the most loyal pet I have ever had. Her kitten stage was a nightmare though, constantly batted at the metal blinds late at night/early morning, knocked stuff off of counter tops, chewed on things, etc. She has since grown out of it.

My dog has been an ******* the whole way through. Barks at everything, destroys my yard, and periodically barfs all over the house. Good dog with the kids thoough.

Buy some of those plastic carpet protectors and turn them upside down on the counters. I have a cat that likes to be up on stuff. I've taught her to get down when I tell her -- but she had to play "cat in space" a couple times to get the idea.

She also comes into the house from our backyard when I call her -- because I wouldn't let her out for a while when she didn't come to my call.

She's alright for a cat, but I still prefer dogs.

I guess as probably on the only fanatic on here who likes cats, I will come to their defense. Obviously some cats are going to be mischievous and especially as kittens more than adult cats. I also think male cats are more likely to misbehave than females. I have a female cat and when she did get in trouble I would spray with water, and now never misbehave.

I was not into cats until I met the wife. If that is all you are complaining about, then you are fortunate. We currently have one that likes to chew holes in blankets and other fabrics. Now on out third comforter and the cat is not even 2! The other one gets bleeding rodent ulcers of the mouth and cannot find the cause. If you want them off counters, I heard that double sided tape can be applid to jump on points. As for plants, I'd move them to another room with door shut when you are gone.

leave a camera running while you are gone. Post video to Reddit. You'll get lots of useless karma.

That's all the help I can provide. Like you, most of our cats were half-blind cousins.

Put aluminium foil on the counter where the cat jumps up.

They hate aluminim foil... it'll stop em from jumping up there if they land on it a few times.
