The 2 programs maybe can be compared now with regards to transfers, but to me it seems like Fred started taking/recruiting/accepting transfers in a much different and much more risky way. ISU wasn't just getting graduated 5th-year seniors like Kane, or JC guys (most programs have sustained themselves from the JC ranks, at least to a degree, for years). He was taking on misfits, athletic guys that for one reason or another didn't make it work at their first school, etc. Because of the great season he had here, it's sometimes hard to remember that bringing Royce White, Booker, Babb etc. to Ames, for a coach in his first job, was a big risk for his program, yet Fred made it work, and ISU became affectionately known as "an island of misfit toys" for a couple seasons. Fred basically gambled a part of his reputation on this strategy, and now look at him, and us by extension.
