Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

My biggest thing in this entire process is that I think Iowa State pretty much gave their best effort they could to try and sign him. Long relationship, he loves Hoiberg, multiple unofficial visits, Michigan game OV, unexpected success this year by both individuals and team, and now the 3 OT Ok. St. win. I don't really think we could do too much more. Either it was meant to be or it wasn't.

Also showed him a great game the first time he visited last year vs baylor

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

Question: How much do you think current players know about where we stand with Vaughn? I asked one player tonight but don't want to post his reply if it's not any better informed than our own.

You don't have to post it...we just want to know whether it's good or bad news :)

Pretty sure anything the current players know will be kept between them and their future teammate. Don't want to start off by breaking trust.

May not be a teammate. He's good friends with Seanna Johnson according to twitter.

I'll just say this: There was some positivity but also left with a sense that this person was themselves not sure. Makes me believe that no one in our camp actually knows the decision, which makes me nervous, but still hopeful.

Doesn't surprise me. Vaughn has played this as close to the vest as possible. Even his interviews are almost carbon copies regardless of the team he's chatting about. Which makes it all the more important to look at the outliers...his glowing comments about ISU on his visit, wanting to play Hoiberg one on one, etc. You don't hear that about the other schools.

Take it with a grain of salt to be sure - I'm certainly just offering my opinion. But I've got a good feeling about this.

Or gas.

Could be gas.

Seriously, get your heads out of your @sses everyone and get a Vaughn avatar! If he doesn't pick us, you are the single reason he doesn't come to ISU for simply not changing your avatar. Do you want to live with that guilt for the rest of your life?

Mission accomplished. I tried to go for the double win by using the double flop..

Gotta get my 2 cents of excitement in before the announcement. It seems like this process has been forever. Glad to have the cap put on one way or another by RV. Go State!!!

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

Given that he is already in Las Vegas, the advantage UNLV has with him in their back yard, the fact he has a handler (Kaffey), and UNLV has shown a lot more ability (for whatever reason) to bring in top rated players than Iowa State, I'm inclined to believe he is going to UNLV. We are still going to be in good shape for next year, especially if we score a player like Marvin Clark.

It amazes me how certain schools are able to land such highly rated players. Baylor has brought in a lot of top 50 guys out of highschool in the Drew area. How is that happening? They don't have a basketball culture, their gym is half full when they are good. UNLV has good support, but it is out west in a non power conference. Exposure is extremely limited. I can't understand them landing top 100 guys and maybe a top 50 guy from time to time, but they have the ability to get top 25 players. Then you have a place like Iowa State. I know Ames (the city) is not thought of as center ring, but the basketball culture is off the charts, we have fans that follow the team to the conference tournament in the 1000s, a great home court, ect... yet still have not been able to bring top 50 guys out of highschool. I don't get it.

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

Using my imagination...
RV will announce he graduated HS at semester and has already gained NCAA approval to reclassify as a 2013 prospect, he will suit up for ISU for our tournament run this year (a la Walker at Florida) and return for 1 more year.

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

After this is all said and done we need to have something like a reunion show on this thread. Bring back all the trolls and forgotten posters of this thread, and re-post all the best posts, and compile a final list of all topics non Rashad Vaughn related.

Yeah, it could be kind of like the post-Hunger Games champions' tour.

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

Anybody who is reading into the fact that since he's in Vegas now that he has to pick them because he's afraid the town will shun him, is an idiot. Players do this kind of stuff all the time. Barnes did it, Alexander for Kansas did it, and plenty of other recruits have done it. The fact that Vaughn currently resides in Vegas has nothing at all to do with it. Kansas and Kentucky are out of it, and pretty sure that UNC is as well if he's cancelled his visit. If the guy was going to commit to UNC, he wouldn't cancel his visit out there the following week. We have a two-horse race between us, a school in one of the consistently best conferences in basketball with an always packed stadium and crazy fans, or UNLV, a school that plays in a joke of a conference and has literally dozens of fans at each game. Unless Kaffey getting hired as an assistant is all that matters to Vaughn, there's no way I see him picking UNLV. Yeah, they're bringing in a great class next year. But their guys are going to be all freshman and we won't know how good guys like Goodluck will be immediately. Iowa State, on the other hand, has Morris, Thomas, Hogue, Long, Nader, and Niang coming back to go along with guys that could be great at the collegiate level in McKay and Custer (who I think is going to be VERY good). Why wouldn't you pick ISU?! This is such a perfect fit for the guy.

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

If there is any merit to Vaughn saying he wants to go somewhere that he has a chance to win a National Championship, I think his decision becomes pretty simple. I think this year's team and Hoiberg have demonstrated that there is a much better chance of that happening here than UNLV. However, I'm not completely confident quite yet.

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

I haven't seen this take, but I haven't been able to read every post either.

I would be really surprised if RV chose UNC. Vaughn was the #2 rated recruit from MN. It's fairly well known that he always felt a little like 2nd fiddle to Tyus Jones here in MN. Most people think that's why RV went to Vegas for his senior year.

With Jones (& Okafor) going to Duke, they will be the heavy favorite in the ACC next year. I'd be surprised if Vaughn would want to put himself in a situation where he'd possibly be in Jones' shadow again, even though they'd be a different schools.

Re: Rashad Vaughn - Announcing Saturday

Rashad Vaughn should love the Mayor's Offense. Brent and Fran were going on and on how Fred Hoiberg runs a Pro type offense which takes advantage of mismatches. ISU is No. 1 in the nation in assists per game and No. 4 in the nation in offense. It is common for ISU to have several guys in double figure scoring.

And then you have guys like Monte Morris, Matt Thomas, Naz Long, and Dustin Hogue who are such great role players and do their job, game after game. Not complaining because they might not be on the floor but ready for when their number is called. And making big plays that win games.

We have a great TEAM. And winning puts you in the spotlight. Rashad Vaughn would give us one more piece of the puzzle. And we look damn good right now. The Mayor is building something special.
